GO ARMY!! (but i had to put money on navy..theres no way army will win or even come close)
check- there was an incorrect suspend time (I'm to blame...OOPS!). Generally if wagers have been made after the question should have been suspended, those wagers will be returned. If ever you see a question that should be suspended or has a bad suspend time/date, please flag the question and provide the reason for the flag. Flagging is very helpful (and very much appreciated)as it brings attention to the category editor's attenion. Thank you very much and best of luck on all your predictions!
Army's not gonna win (sad to say) :^(
phlf- if you click on a username, it takes you to their profile. On the profile it states how long they have been with Hubdub and how many comments they have made. You can also view their comments there. I hope this helps.
I agree, the forums are a great place for all types of discussion. They are fairly new to the site and I think users are just starting to warm up to them.
Best of luck to you!

Hi everyone, thanks for your feedback/comments on this. I have brought this to the admin's/tech crew's attention. My "open questions" seems to be working fine at the moment. Is anyone still experiencing troubles with this page? The guys have been busy doing some maintenance on the site, including adding "ALL" version to the upper right side (questions under "ALL" are a combination of UK and US located questions). I am not sure if the issues you describe have been corrected or not. Would you mind commenting again here to let us know? Also could you please state which version you are using when having this problem (US, UK or ALL)? Thanks in advance. Hope any outstanding complications get resolved quickly!

www.yahoo.com avg- 34ms
www.ballhype.com avg- 34ms
www.hubdub.com avg- 104ms
ww2.hubdub.com avg- 103ms
www.nfl.com avg-26ms
www.nhl.com
and www.hubdub.com once more - 104ms again
I dont know if this info helps at all. Again, I am on the East Coast US.

jake- are your created questions still not showing up? I have noticed that they sometimes take a while (up to an hour) to appear on my "CREATED QUESTIONS--OPEN QUESTIONS" list. Usually after just a few minutes, they all appear on my "OPEN QUESTIONS". For some reason they don't ALL, always appear on my dashboard. I don't know if its because I am creating them too close together for them to "register" immediately or if it is another reason.
If you are still having a problem seeing your created questions, use the "CONTACT US" link under the HELP section and hopefully you will get a "more official" response.
Best of Luck!

hey rcrow, thanks for creating this question. I know it can sometimes be a tricky thing to do. Just about every creator I know has had to request a void on one of their own questions. Please don't let it discourage you, you do a great job! I suspended the question so that no more wagers can be made on it. It takes an admin to void it though. Thanks again and best of luck to you!
pixel- good call! Titans are at 44 points right now...
"football" is a term used to describe several games (as jamest lists)and sports around the world. On Hubdub "soccer" is used to describe "UK football" just so that it is easier to differentiate between American football and non-American football. If you notice, under sports there is NOT a "football section" but rather NFL and NCAAF.
If we are going to argue about what to call things maybe we should have a forum about "chips or fries" or "smokes or fags"...
This is just a silly argument if you ask me.

Hey leave Santa out of this! ;)
Hiya biggz aka new guy. Welcome to Hubdub! The hot topics are usually the questions found on the home page. They are the ones that have the most people wagering on them (within the last day) You can also sort them by category if you would like to. I really like making predictions on sports, not only can I earn bragging rights but generally they "payout" daily. Best of luck!

I love football (American), baseball and hockey. Those are probably my favorite sports to watch. To me they all require alot of effort, team work, stamina, etc but the reason I prefer them is simply because I find them more interesting. I don't think it's because I am an American.
I am not a basketball fan, not a soccer fan, not a rugby fan, nor golf, tennis, cricket..... I don't know where to draw the line as to what I consider games or sports but I do know what I find to be more interesting. MMA, UFC, and such, I can tolorate but I would have to put those in more of an entertainment category.
When I think of sports I think of teams and excitement. It's a good idea to keep in mind that Hubdubbers come from all over the globe and vary in opinions and preferences.
I think part of the reason the forums are here are so that our diverse community can discuss, defend and voice opinions. Not everyone will like each other's opinion but we should all try our best to remain respectful.

thanks, noteablenotices

hopefully this helps to clear things up for anyone not quite understanding this discussion...

jus sanguinis (right of blood) and jus soli (right of birthplace)
Here is how the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service explains the difference:

"The 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees citizenship at birth to almost all individuals born in the United States or in U.S. jurisdictions, according to the principle of jus soli. Certain individuals born in the United States, such as children of foreign heads of state or children of foreign diplomats, do not obtain U.S. citizenship under jus soli.
Certain individuals born outside of the United States are born citizens because of their parents, according to the principle of jus sanguinis (which holds that the country of citizenship of a child is the same as that of his / her parents). "
It is my understanding that you have a right to claim citizenship if your birth parents are US citizens. But you are not automatically considered a citizen (with citizen's rights). In some cases you must "establish" this.
An example :
A US soldier (using a male as an example) fathers a child with a non US woman and then returns to the states. This child grows up never knowing their father and discovers he was a US citizen, the child has a right to claim citizenship, but there are steps to take to establish this.
aww thanks! (haha)
Thanks orlin, it's appreciated :^)

Hey orlin, you should always feel welcome to create questions. If there is a subject you are particularly knowledgeable in and have an interest in, please create questions for it. I strongly encourage question creation, no matter what category it falls under.
Sometimes regular users or admins get caught up in things and for whatever reason do not continue to create markets they have been creating all along. If there are events occuring that you would like to wager on and do not see questions posted (that usually are), a nice gesture might be to leave a shout for the "regular creator" asking if they plan on posting them or if they would mind if you post them. I have done this in the past and for the most part, the "regular creator" was busy and really appreciated me "stepping in".
Also, feel free to start a forum or contact a staff member if you have any questions about starting percentages, etc.
Thanks for all the participation you have on Hubdub and Best of luck on your predictions.

I don't understand why people feel the need to insult on here. I think its very fair for users who are unsure of exactly what a question means or details about settlement to ask and discuss it in comments. Of course if someone really needs clarity, the best thing to do is flag the question and leave your question/comment for the admin to respond to. I don't think it's right to call names and such just because someone was asking/commenting.
@curios you're settlement info wasn't clearly written in the background or settlement details. If you would like to have something added, please flag your question and request it.

Here is one thread discussing rewards for question creating:
http://www.hubdub.com/e/Topic/Why_arent_YOU_creating_questions_33

I know the Hub staff is busy this month trying to improve the over all user experience. One of the things I have been pushing for is a rewards system for question creators.
One of the issues with awarding with Hub doh is it will not give an accurate reflection of how well a user is predicting. Another factor to consider is people "stealing" each others questions. If a user is comfortable creating a market week after week or day after day (and other hubdubbers seek these questions and trust the accuracy, etc)and someone comes along and "beats them to it", just to earn reward money, it could cause some negative tension on the site.
So my thoughts are to create some sort of awards system separate from cash. I would like to see a system that indicates what "level" of question creation a user is. Maybe this could be based on the number of settled questions. (50 settled questions, level 1, 250 settled questions, level 2, 500 settled questions, level 3....etc). I think if we based it on the number of settled questions it would promote quality questions and users would have another "goal" to reach on the site. I had considered using question popularity (number of predictors on questions) as a basis for levels. too. The problem I see with that is those questions that are well written and researched but "less popular" wouldn't get credit. I think all creators deserve some reward for their time and efforts.
Another idea I had was to allow users to indicate which questions they like by giving it a positive vote. Simply, if you see a question you like, give it a vote(thumb up, star, big H, something). Maybe we could display how many votes creators have received on their question as well as their total on their profiles.
Perhaps we could do a system that involves both ideas. Maybe you reach a certain level based on how many votes you have received.
Please feel free to comment with any ideas/feedback. I would like to know what other question creators have in mind and I would be happy to pass the information along to the admin.

Let me start by saying, I am an American and except for the times I lived overseas due to deployment or reassignment by the US Army (while serving), I have lived in the US my whole life. 2 years were spent living in Alaska.
I do not "hate" Sarah Palin as she is also an American serving our country by being involved in the goverment. My personal opinion is that she is not "well seasoned". Although she probably has done a good job up in Alaska, I don't think she would have made a good Vice President. When you step out in to the public eye the way she did, it opens up the door for negative comments and opinions...alot of people will find it easier to "not vote" for someone than to find reasons to vote for them. Its just the way things go. People search for the negatives in public figures. Unfortunately Sarah Palin made this easy to do.

thanks mrperfkt for responding to this so promptly.
rcrow- thank you for bringing your concerns to the forum. I am hoping that anyone else experiencing a delay in question settlement can maybe use the information posted here to get their issues resolved in a timely manner. In regards to your specific questions, I also did not see multiple requests on them. This, as mrperfkt stated could have been a hubdub error. Also as mrp suggests, flagging a question brings the attention to the category editor and will help them stand out more.
orlin- thank you for sharing your opinion and concern for the workload of mrperfkt. I think mrperfkt does a fantastic job as the sport editor and is known for his quick and accurate settlements. I assure you he is well supported by Super Users and other category editors, from all over the globe. If ever you experience an unusually long settlement, please continue to follow the suggestions above. Thanks again for all of your participation in the site and especially for the questions you create.

hey rcrow- first, I want to say thanks for creating those questions and requesting settlement on them. I am not sure which questions are awaiting settlement, specifically but I will take a look and try to find out what is going on. I don't have the power to settle questions myself, but I can try to take a closer look and see what is going on. As far as suggestions go, if you haven't already, it is helpful to paste a link to your source when requesting a settlement. This makes it easier on the admin to settle questions accurately and quickly. The more details, the better. If the questions are not settled shortly or you have similar concerns in the future and would like a more official response, try using the CONTACT US form (as dieseldog suggests), located under HELP or email category editors directly (most have their email on their profiles). Thanks again for the questions you've created and best of luck with all of your hubdubbing!

Trying to make predictions on sports questions but they are taking about a minute to load and another minute for the prediction (amount wagered) to go through. At the bottom of my screen it says Waiting for digg.com...something to do with tools and it stays on that for a while. Then it goes to reddit, but that is instant.
I am not sure how it all works but I am hoping that by passing along this information it might help the tech crew figure out how to speed things up.

OH another idea is to allow users to to award a creator with a "thumb up" or a "star"(or some hubdub symbol). If someone sees a question they like, they could give it a positive vote(one star per person per question). A user could accumulate these and it can show up on their profile (indicate how many stars/thumbs up a creator has been given, by fellow hubdubbers).
posted 5 weeks ago
I'm just curious, if Hubdub had a leaderboard for question creators, what do you think it should be based on? Number of questions? Should it be broken down by categories?
I was thinking a good idea might be to have a ranking system. Where you achieve certain "levels" of question creating. Maybe after a certain number of settled questions a user earns a new rank and it can be indicated somehow on their profile. Any thoughts?

It will take a minute sometimes for a question to load or to make a prediction. The slowness lasts a half hour or so, typically.

I don't really understand how saying they will donate the clothes to charity justifies spending that kind of money. What charity will they be donated to? How do they donate them (auction them off on ebay?)? I really just don't get what the donation thing is about. I think alot of people would have been happy to hear they donated $140,000 to a charity (that puts new clothes on families that can not afford clothing) and took Sarah Palin to JC Penny's, Sears, Walmart, Target, etc and spent $10,000 for business attire. You could get her 20 x $300(or much cheaper!) outfits and still have money left over. She would still be dressed professionally and this wouldn't be all over the news.
I wonder how much they spend to dress McCain
some hockey mom! I doubt Walmart or Target gained $150,000....
Personally I would prefer B. With more possible outcomes, the lower the starting percentages would be (the bigger the pay out if I predict correctly!) ;)

That is also my understanding, diesel. If you were to cash in all your predictions at once, added with your cash, that is the amount of hubdoh you would be left with(net worth). Again, I could be wrong, but that is my understanding.

Hi jchiang, I could be wrong but I think this has to do with the leaderboards updating about every hour or so. It states on there: "Note: Leaderboards are updated roughly every hour so it may take time for changes (including new users appearing) to take effect. Last update was at..."
Your "cash in" value may bounce around alot during an hour(changing your total net worth), depending on how many other users are making predictions on the questions you wagered on. I hope this helps.

Hi, dragon01- I, too noticed the appearance of the site had changed. I am not sure if it was the fonts or if it was the other things in the layout/background that have been changed. I did notice the "tags" and other things on the right side of questions' pages are "neater". I am not sure if that has affected the over all brightness or not. I just wanted to let you know that you aren't the only one who has noticed slight changes in appearance.
Also, as frustrating as some replies may be (either seemingly rude or incorrect grammar/spelling, etc), these discussions are open for all users to comment on. They are a great way to bounce ideas off of other hubdubbers, discuss or debate issues, as well as bringing a more social way to communicate on hubdub. If ever you have a concern, question or idea that you prefer to get a more "official" response to, please use the "CONTACT US" form found under the HELP section.

already at 24 total homeruns, thanks all who predicted on this question!
Hi curios, sometimes things stated on the internet are often misunderstood. For one, there is no "tone" in typing and there are so many cultural differences, different phrases and different meanings for things depending on where you are located in the world. I believe Tater was trying to speak in general and trying to say if you aren't sure of what you are betting on, either research it or refrain from betting on it. There are alot of "______ for Dummies" books in North America and we commonly refer to them (they are widely known here). I don't believe tater was trying to single out and insult someone. This thread was about an issue in question creation and has been discussed and resolved. At least until there is an easier solution available we would like to let this issue "rest" thank you.

I think Tony Romo's a wimp. He's got a broken pinky finger, I don't even think its on his throwing hand. So many other players have sucked it up and played with much worse injuries. If he doesn't play the next couple games and Cowboys lose, they will just use him being out as their excuse.

wow 20 homeruns so far! KUDOS to the high end predictors...should be a nice payout.
Personally, I am not a red sox fan (sorry your team got killed last night)but I wish you the best of luck with your hubdub predictions!
Well I guess we can't please everyone. I have already gone through and explained the reason adding another step to creating a question isn't what is necessarily easiest on the creator and also that not every request will be fulfilled. You say the favor you are asking is so simple, yet I just told you that takes more time to the already lengthly process. I also think it is simple to click on a question you are unsure of and either read the background (full team names are usually found there as well as in the tags). Doing this is simple. I agree, sdchargers is one of, if not, the best question creator for sports, but even he does NOT always include FULL names of teams in every question. WHY? Because not only does it take longer to do that, but because the question itself then becomes very long. Question creator's all have a different style and way of doing it. Some ways are preferred and I understand that. Sorry for the "lecture" but it was written in a way that the general community could understand it (not meant to determine who has been involved in the site longer...). I could get personal (as you have) about the way you create questions, but personally the questions you have created (although they arent the exact format I would like) are appreciated and I would not want to discourage you from all the effort and work you put in to them.
posted 7 weeks ago
It some times takes a while for people to respond to postings not because they didn't read it or consider it, but because there are other discussions going on behind the scenes and actions that the Hubdbub community is not aware of.
What some Hubdubbers don't realize is Super Users are volunteers. We spend hours a day doing work and lending a hand on the site to help it run smooth and be the best predicting site on the net. We spend hours researching, requesting settlements, flagging and suspending questions, adding pictures, bringing things to the admin's attention and offering input and suggestions. When the admin selected Super Users it was not based on any one thing. You do not have to have perfect grammar, perfect English or have more questions settled than anyone else. They selected SU's from a list of nominated hubdubbers and picked them all for different reasons. Each Super User contributes to this site in different ways. We all go out of our way to assist the admin and cat editors.
Alot of the Super Users are question creators as well. It takes alot of effort, time and research to create questions. Some question creators produce dozens of questions on a daily basis. They have to have exact suspend times, perfect starting odds, detailed backgrounds and clear tags. All of those steps take a great deal of energy and time to do. That time is volunteered and very much appreciated. Often this work goes unnoticed and there is very little recognition or reward for it. I think tater as well as all of the SU's and cat ed's/admin do a fantastic job and should continue with the good work they do! (we tend to hear more complaints than praise).
It is difficult to try to meet every individual request that Hubdubbers have, but we have to use our judgement and see what works best for us as well.
Asking question creators to add another step to an already difficult task may not be something a creator would like to do. Although I understand where the request is coming from.
I wanted to make you aware of a request I have put in and hopefully it will help to clear some things up. I have asked the admin/tech crew to see about automatically indicating subcategories next to the questions. This when when (for example) you go to the SPORTS page, you will know which league/sport the question is asking about. This I believe would work well in all categories.
Thanks again to all Super Users and staff, for everything you do!

When I first started out on Hubdub, I thought the whole idea of predicting the news and wagering with fake money was just so cool. Sometimes, its not about what or how much you win, but just being right! (taternutz5) and I really loved the sports questions but we wanted to be able to wager on every game played. At that time only a handful of games were posted at a time (probably someones favorite teams, etc). He and I would pick a sport (hockey/baseball, etc) and check to see what games were not posted for wagering. We "filled in" the ones that were not there. To this day, I still love wagering on sports questions best. I find alot of other topics interesting but I think the daily payout and bragging rights is what lures me to sports. Only now, I dont necessarily pick the teams I think will win! Sometimes I will pick a team that will have a better pay out if they do win. When betting on other topics, I tend to go through my "challenges" first and I also go back to the home page to see what is closing soon. I agree with dieseldog in that I dont like to wait for an outcome. The downfall to this is by the time I get to a question that is closing soon (but has been open a while) I dont get great %'s/value...I guess theres a side to everything!

@neuronexmachina I am sorry to inform you, currently the "create question" function is not working properly. I am not sure how fast this error will be fixed. Please check back periodically. I know this is an inconvenience.

hey tom, its a problem hubdub is having for the past few hours. i am not sure what will come of these "blanks". i suggest holding off for a bit on creating to see if the techs can get it working properly.

sfcdd- Your initial $1000 will not auto-replenish, so try to use it wisely. You can, however earn $20 in "Hub Doh" simply by signing in each day.
Also, here is a link to a forum that gives you tips and suggestions for a successful experience on Hubdub:

GOOD LUCK!

@destry...you are fast! I guess we were typing at the same time
HI chappy, you are not an idiot. Alot of people (including myself) get confused or even intimidated by point spreads.
To answer your question: if you pick Washington +11.5, that means you think Washington will either win the game or lose by less than 11.5 points. If you pick Dallas -11.5 that means you think Dallas will win by 11.5 points or more. I hope this helps!
The benefit of using point spreads on Hubdub is that it allows the predictions to start at an even 50/50%.
Also, keep your eyes open, someone may post the simple "who will win" questions (without spreads) for this week as well.
aww thanks, glad you like em! (what you winkin for?)hehe
great job with this question, dd!
what? you better go get the couch ready :p
i picked the "angles" hehe (now whos question has errors?)
ty mrp!
i know nerd, i flagged it :-p
i flagged this question. with 6 games postponned i am not sure how they will handle this.
i think the initial odds were pretty fair because those players who havent made recent predictions could still come back and do some wagering. there's also the chance of the top players dropping...(with some bad predictions)
as far as "inactive players", does that mean they are restricted from predicting? I am confused as to if these players choose not to play any more or if they are "banned"...(along the lines of what kruijs is saying..how do we know?)
buckeye- thanks for that suggestion! that definately would help span it out a bit especially since we are only allowed 10 possible outcomes. makes sense for postponed games/unexpected doubleheaders etc. tyvm
buckeye- youre welcome, still trying to figure out fair brackets, etc. i'll run this a few times and hopefully get it right. i think there is plenty of user interest. let me know if you would like to do this question, as you were the original creator of this market :)
i agree, i think they are two different questions and it would be great if both types were posted each week. both types of questions would capture the interest of HDers. as far as starting percentages go, using your best judgement as to what is "fair" is the best advice. believe me, if people think they are unfair, they will speak up and flag, comment etc. thanks again
thanks bayou for creating these. I am wondering if there is a way we can post both types of markets. Since there is a debate of which type is "better", is it possible to run both "straight ups" and "ATS"? Would that be considered duplicate markets? I think running both would allow users to wager on their preferred market instead of limiting them to the "first one posted", not to mention less competition amongst question creators to be first.
how many mlb players will dine in chuckEcheese venue....hehe
yw carl, i intend to

yes, buckeye this was a great question. I think if people know to look for it, then it will become quite popular. I wasnt really sure about the brackets and %s, but did my best. Let me know if you would like to post this, otherwise I think I will, just to see if it takes off.
I really liked when someone used to post this question. I am not sure who originally posted it or why they stopped, but I thought I would run it and see how it goes. GOOD LUCK ALL
I like how you tweeked the new brackets, good job
Its up to admin to clarify these questions, but I think alot of people make predictions based on the pitchers' stats and tater has a good point.
Alot of folks have asked me to keep making these o/u questions. After coming to terms with the Hubdub staff, I have decided to continue with this market. Thanks all those who supported me...and good luck!

If you are going to email a question creator and ask them to tag their questions in a certain way, you should provide the reason for the request. As a "common" hubdubber, I have no idea what is going on behind the scenes as far as your vision for the NFL landing page. With some explaination for your requests, I may have been more understanding and willing to help hubdub reach its goals.
As far as having all the same logo for these over/under questions, that was intentional. Also for visual clarity. I thought by making this "type" of question with all the same picture, its easier to spot (or avoid!) this market. If the hubdubbers would like to wager on O/Us (or steer clear of), instead of reading every question individually, they pick out the logo being used for that week, that market (when going through "hot" or "closing soon", etc...all the questions get jumbled up) My intentions were to use a different logo for each game day, to keep this market "uniform"
The email you sent me wasn't rude or anything. But yes I do feel criticized. Part of the reason I enjoy creating questions is because its fun to be creative, try different pictures, different styles.
As far as feeling as I was criticized.. you said you "fixed" my tags. There was nothing wrong with the existing tags. Theres no rule about how to tag a question. Its one thing if you want to add a few to make searching for a question easier, but that isnt what you said you did.
If you go to any other category or question, one or two words or phrases are usually sufficiant for tagging. If people want to predict on these types of questions, typing in the team name, nfl or over under would take them right to it. I dont think its necessary to add leagues etc. So you "fixed" something that didnt need fixing, in my opinion.
As far as changing the pictures go, if the question creator cant pick out the ones they would like next to their own questions whats the point of having that option? It would be one thing if a question had no pic at all (again if you ADDED, not changed). It also would be nice if you asked before just changing them. (they were not vulgar or offensive)
I'm sure you know how much time goes in to creating questions. When you create them, you probably prefer to use your own style, as do I. Since my style isnt to your liking, I'd prefer to just let someone else create these.
Since the admin decided to change my pics and didnt like how i was tagging my questions (putting team names, nfl and over under wasnt enough) I feel as if I have been criticized, not encouraged. I am done creating this market. Anyone else who would like to take these questions on for the NFL season is more than welcome
