Hey friend, the box office questions are sorely lacking this week. Can I interest you in a question or two?
Yeah well it was a condition of taking the job to put up a real pic.. definitely prefer the baby shots! Maybe after I'm compliant for a few weeks I'll sneak a baby pic back up :)
Thanks!
Thanks!
Hmm. You're ahead of me now... Gonna have to start trying a little harder. The only category I really care much about is Entertainment and I'm down to #6 there -- that just won't do at all!
ya'know the difference btwn a TX cowboy and OKLA cowboy?

I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as soon as I could.
If you leave TX, and move to a liberal state, such as WA (which btw, I lived, married, and had my kids in Spokane), when you return to TX, they make you move to OK. Sorry.

Lucid, I was out of the house all day and just seeing your Q now for the first time. Graphics and script were both good, nice effects seeing his girlfriend (?) wife (?) ignite constantly when stressed. Lou Diamond Phillips did a better bad guy than I would have thought, good humor punctuated the script and the Pan's Labrynith costume chest seems to have been raided rather extensively. Good popcorn movie, not deep but fun. Hard to gauge audidence reaction, it was just me and a couple of employees watching, TaNika is watching it now, with a real audience, I'll let you know what she thought later tonight.
Lucid,
Watched Hellboy earlier this evening, enjoyed it better than the original, but virutally no takers from the public for the midnight sneak peak.

Yeah, it's something like that, the idea is still somewhat nebulous in my mind, I suspect that the aggragate of Will Smith's movies to date is already overy $1B, eight @ $120M each would do it. So perhaps a forecast of if/when Will Smith might get 10 in a row over $100M would be the way to phrase it. Interestingly I also saw a news item that said Tiger Woods, keeping up his current pace, would cross the $1B threshold in earnings sometime in 2010, however with his recent admissions about his left knee this could be a bit less likely now.
Lucid,
I'm working on a market, I think Will Smith MAY be the first actor who had leading roles in films that grossed more than a billion dollars combined. Do you happen to know?

Lucid,
I don't see anything getting in the way of HP now that you mention it, even 007 will have been out by two weeks then:
November, 7 Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa Paramount Pictures
November, 7 Quantum of Solace Sony Pictures
November, 7 Slumdog Millionaire (exclusive) Warner Independent
November, 14 Soul Men Miramax/Dimension
November, 14 Australia 20th Century Fox
November, 14 Little Big Men Universal
November, 14 The Other End of the Line (limited) MGM
November, 14 The Road (exclusive) Miramax/Dimension
November, 21 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Warner Bros.
November, 21 The Soloist Paramount Pictures

Hey Lucid, to paraphrase the former Fed Chairman this looks like irrational exuberence to me:
How much will Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince make in it's open weekend?
$75-$100M opening weekend? I'm sure it will do great, but are there enough SEATS to command this kind of a weekend take?! What do you think? Just curious.

Lucid,
Give me a recap of the theme from church today later if you have time, I'm interested. & thanks for your comments also. I bet "against" you only because @ 8% odds for the 2nd most likely option on your Q it was to enticing to pass up, I think the likely results will be right around the 1st or 2nd options. Did a movie marathon last night, watched, Wall-e (great), Love Guru (embarrasing, but Jessica Alba is stunning) and Hancock, (again), I'm not sure why Will Smith & Hancock are getting chewed on in reviews, my African American wife has a reasonable opinion on this but to me it just seems confusing, I found the movie to be very good and more substantive in theme & msg than most action-ish flicks, I anticipate it having legs.

Lucid, don't lose heart my man, some folks are only happy, when they're scrappin'. I read once about how in ages past groups of men would converge to do battle in the MIddle Ages, een when there was no ACTUAL dispute! They would get together and mock battle, but the only thing "mock" about it was the absence of a formal declaration of hostilities, they still busted heads, just the nature of man I think.
Anyway, for my money, HD or otherwise, I respect and admire your Q creation, keep up the great work!

Honestly if I knew it was going to play on Tuesday I would not have bet. Don't freak out - that's just the way I thought about the question. If I knew it would open tues night then I would have bet for a bigger wed night. If it opened wed night I would have thought a bigger thurs.
That was my logic.

Im not talking about the big question Im talking about the small one about how much it would make on it's first day.

Your question about Hancock in the first day should be voided since it opened on Tuesday and not Wed... Clearly there is no way to settle it fairly.

Batman will be the highest grossing film of the year. It will also garner acadamy awards for Heath Ledget and perhaps Bale. If the price falls for the highest amount I'll bet more.
I like the short term bets more than the long term ones. Long term ties up your money too much.

Wall-E Stunk. Without the promotion it would have been lucky to do 30M.
Wanted kicked ass... and I think it's going to hurt Hancock.

Nothings every personal dude. I've had more fun screwing with you and Destry here than I've had here in a long time!
I'm at the very bottom of the quarterly gains all users leaderboard today.
But I won't be there long. You'll see me in your rear-view mirror in about 1 week. That is, if you don't step on the gas too soon. And then there is the Wall-E situation. Hey, you know what, when Wall-E settles, I may just blow right by you so fassssst, I won't even see the blur. hehe.
See you on top bro!

Thanks for noticing, Sprezzatura is one of my favorite words, it's Italian and doesn't translate cleanly into English, it is a theme of a ggod book I read, the Compleat Gentleman... Here is a link that describes it...http://www.amazon.com/Compleat-Gentleman-Modern-Guide-Chivalry/dp/189062652X.. and here is an excerpt review...a true gentleman is a master of the art of sprezzatura. The term, as used by the Renaissance writer Castiglione, refers to a way of life characterized by discretion and decorum, nonchalance and gracefulness—or, as Miner defines it, the cool exemplified by the men in first class on the Titanic who went bravely to their deaths in evening clothes. Underneath this unflappable quality, which says is not determined by birth or class, resides a man who is at once a warrior (a readiness to face battle for a just cause), lover (he lets a woman be what she wants to be) and monk (a man possessing true knowledge). In erudite and witty prose, Miner explores these three facets of his concept of the gentleman through an engaging survey of knighthood, warfare and courtship, "compleat" with the title's archaic spelling. Beyond a liberal sprinkling of quotes from the likes of G.K. Chesterton and Edmund Burke, the author provides a learned romp through the worlds of Eleanor of Aquitaine, the Cathars (a medieval heretical sect) and Benedictine monasticism. Miner's theories are consistently entertaining, and seem pitched toward a defense of his conservative view of contemporary politics, including his endorsement (in the book) of the Iraq war. In fact, Miner believes that a pacifist can be a gentleman only if he is also a saint, and, in gentlemanlike fashion, he acknowledges his guilt about his C.O. status during the Vietnam War....look up this word and let me know what you think!
Lucid, if you're still up I just posted my comments. I really did enjoy this movie, yeah Will Smith starts out as a lush, but he's a sympathetic character, and like I said, their are enough '
macho' elements for guys to enjoy it and enough subtle relationship angles to keep chic's interest, a clever blend of explosions and chic flix, other elements, bratty kids get their comeupance, the star undergoes a gradual, painful metomorphosis, overcoming adversity, self sacrifice, believable special effects.

Hey there. Love to get your feelings on Hancock opening. I see you posted some HSX information for the 3 day total. what is your thought on the 5 day total.
Hancock will do the same numbers as I am legend plus 20 percent since it isnt scary and more super hero-ish. Dark Knight will do 100 million easyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
So since I am legend made 256 million, Hancock will make 65 opening weekend million and in the long run will do about 290 million. Mrs. Johnson signing off for my hubbyy.
Lucid, this was TaNika's original forecast, when I reminded her about the long holiday weekend for Hancock she adjusted her forecast to say 100M for the long weekend. ~ Adam

Lucid,
You have now received the first ever (HD) shout out from my wife, TaNika, movie manager and on again/off again movie critic. She's anticipating bigh things for Hancock over the t day holiday weekend. You should ask her sometime about how different types of movies sell different types of concessions, it's hilarious. Too bad there wasn't an effective way to create a market along those lines!

Yeah, you and scott had quite the discussion about Wanted/Wall-E, quite enjoyable to follow. I wonder if this will continue on to your other movie questions. For my entertainment purposes, I sure hope so!
Hi lucidstates,
Whats up man? I left a comment on your "Hellboy 2, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Meet Dave?" question. I would like to get your early opinion on how these movies will do opening weekend also.
Great movie questions you create, thanks again.

Hi lucidstates! Have only recently returned to Hubdub after a very guilty but good holiday! Good to be back - it's amazing how much the site has changed in just 3 weeks. Hope you're well :-)
Lucid,
Watched Wanted this morning @ 12:01am before the general public, Matrix meets The Shooter. Certainly qualifies for the R rating due to blood, lots of bullets bursting from foreheads. I just don't see this beating Wall-E. Should be a blow-out.
Lucid,
I appreciate your comments very much, we're kindred spirits in this regard, on first blush I was a bit put off also, but I'm over it. I'd rather have the confidence that my markets were precise and correct than sloppy and unclear. Don't worry, I'll keep creating and being creative, thanks again!
Adam
p.s. Did you see my market about Apes in Spain? I swear animals rights continue to expand and humans erode!

Luci - Thanks for the note. That picture was taken last weekend when we went camping -- he got pretty dirty! (Note leaf in hair and mud all over face)
Sadly tri has lost his hubdub addiction. He tolerates me talking about it and will check in on his predictions from time to time, but its pretty much up to me to defend the family honor at this point. So, no jealously whatsoever. It also made the day I passed him in net gain rather anti-climatic because he didn't even care. Sigh. Guess I need to find some one else to compete with now!

whats up lucidstates. how you been man? Thanks for taking the time to shout at me. Your right, its been a good month at hubdub, I have been able to spend a few extra days playing market questions more sports questions.
I like how you bet big time on Wall-E earning over 17 mill than Wanted, gave me great% to place couple hundred on 17mill or Less option =)
I, like you, expect Wall-E to gross more in opening weekend, I just hope its less than you expect.
Man you really are the movie question creating master. I tried creating one this week and was voided.....LOL....
Hope you can find time to make a few more, we all love them.

Hey can you give me a link to where I can find information on what movies are projected to open. I hear that studio predicted this and that, but can't ever seem to find them.
Jonathan,
I'm thinking the HD community is REALLY looking for big numbers from WALL-e, did you see these trends lines on my market: Who will raise more money in June, the movie Wall-e or Obama's fundraising? ??!!

Hey Lucidstates, I feel a bit sheepish after you put so much work into this, thank you anyway. By now I think you've seen that I reverted to the more sterile pre-existing classifications on the website that I'm using for settlement, I don't think they are always precise, but I had to come up with something that would minimize arguements beyond just my opinions about where movies fell. OrrorRrama? Must have been typing too fast, that would have been Horror Drama. Anyway, I really enjoy your markets also.
Hey, who do you like for next PM of Israel with Olmert on the way out? Just curious.
My wife & I sat through The Strangers tongiht before she started her shift. Yuck. I NEVER go for these kinds of movies normally, but since she manages the theater she has a bit of a professional reason to sample all the genres, it helps her when deciding whether guest complaints are warranted and what is appropriate for different ages, audiences, etc. The kick was that for the early showing the two of us were the ONLY ones in the cinema, so needless to say we got to cut up and yell at the screen the way you only normally get to at home. That was funny. I'm looking forward to seeing how my movie genre market bounces around on the graph between now and the end of the year.
Hey thanks also for you endorsement of Get Smart, I was on the fence about whether to go or not but now I think I'll make the time, movies for me are free, it's just a matter of getting my 18 year old son to watch my 1 year old (yeah, and I also have a 17 year old and a 10 year old too, all boys), so I can enjoy the movie. Also saw the extended trailer for Wantyed this afternoon, that looks really slick, should bring in some good $.
Lastly, if I might indulge you on a personal matter, as a brother, keep me in your prayers, my normal 9-5 job is with a company that is owned by airlines, and with the price of fuel they are getting killed, it reverberated to me today and I was laid off this morning, so I'll be persuing this opportunity to make a change.
Thanks again, I always smile when I see a note from you.

Dude, I'm working on a market and I need your help.
I'm trying to include all of the standard, customary film types.
Can you tell me what YOU would consider to be the Top 10?
Gotta run, wife just called, their theatre, with 24 screens is running out of all supplies, going to another AMC to stock up and deliver back to her.

I'm with you on Big Brown taking nothing home from the Belmont Stakes.
Position #1, possible damp field among a slew of fast ponies.
Mathematical odds, like you those you provided in comments.
I even think Casino being out will somehow 'spook' him.
Then, as you mentioned, the lead up training, pressure on the staff, UPS photogs.
The extra attention alone would spoil the most ardent athelete.
So, while I not so spendy as you, I'm in on multiple markets, against his winning, for a total of $H15,000.

OH MY! Set to win big or take a bath tomorrow, eh? Good Luck, but the optimist in me (the tiny one) is hoping for a Triple Crown, if for no other reason, I'm sick of hearing about secretariat! The next 20 years will be easy bets if he wins.....
Ludistates, I'm going to give this some thought tonight, I think it's a novel idea also, I'll get back to you on it.
Hey lucidstates... I have the germ of an idea for a market that you could probably develop more succiently... I know that occasionally the soundtrack for a movie earns more money than the movie itself, I know this was true for The Bodyguard and possibly Saturday Night Fever and maybe even Moulin Rouge... what do you think about a market asking whether any upcoming film's soundtrack would earn more than the movie itself? Just a thought.

Jonathan,
Thanks for your note. I'm not suggesting that the troubles in China right now are particularily apocalyptic, just fascinating, I agree with you that often the focus of attention by individuals and entire societies is way too focuses and narrow, one of the things I enjoy about this site is that it is a forum to expand understanding and awareness, for example one of my favorite quotes is "Travel is fatal to pride, prejudice and bigotry - Mark Twain." I think by considering things in a wider scope we become better people, better 'brother's keepers' and more humble. I'm going to try and go back and dig up your questions about Israel, they sound fascinating, as is your blog. My parents gave me such a strong Biblical name and I constantly try to live up to it. It would be great if you could meet my oldest son some day, he'll be 18 in a few days and plays base in a band and has a heart for God.

Hey Lucidstates, You are the only “friend” that I have on Hubdub that has professed his salvation; I’d be fascinated to know what you thought about these events in China this summer. I know that every generation thinks that THEY are the last one and each generation assumes that they are in, or near, the end times, but I gotta tell you, I feel like Revelations and CNN are matching up more and more these days.
God Bless you Bro,

Which days exactly constitute the " Opening Day weekend for IJ4? Friday through Monday? Sat & Sun? Just curious.
Hey Luci, I mean Lucidstates, I'll keep you posted. Yeah, Wall-E looks like it will be really strong, I know you're jazzed about IJ4, and it did about $33M yesterday but there is a whole generation of kids that have grown up and don't know Indi expect from re-runs but DO know all about Pixar.
Hey no problem, got a hint for you, I have an inside track on a lot of movie performance, for example I scored big on my predictions for Narnia and Iron Man and I've got a contrarian bid for Wall-E to clean up. What's my secret? I'm married to a General Manager of an AMC theatre. Before I made a prediction I bounce it off her, so far the advice has been golden, I really enjoy your questions.

30 grand is nothing for you, we spent that on the b*tches and crystal at the casino last week.... good times!!!
Hey Lucid, thanks for the pic complement!
Speaking of pictures, I miss the old one of you. With your long hair and goatee I thought you looked like Captain Jack Sparrow - the younger, wiser, better looking version of Captain Jack =)
I love your new format on the movie questions... THANKS!
Have a great hubdub day,
Fingers

keep up the great work man on the box office front.. with regards Wall-e, forget Short Circuit and check out instead the 1972 sci-fi classic "Silent Running". Dern playing poker with the robots is brilliant.

every single team has done it
and only the pats got caught
haha too bad it was 18-1 not 19-0

I'm partial to a protest myself (Sydney and Tokyo, anti-Iraq) , hope you had a good one in San Diego, and keep up those great questions! Those oil questions are brilliant, I love the split, like Tri's gallup questions. If your going to lose H$, lose globally. I for the time being will continue with irrelevant questions in the hope of a Marie Curie style breakthrough one day.
Yeah, I hear ya lucid... freedom of choice should never apply to ending someone's life without just cause. Unborn babies are the most innocent and least defended segment of society. I've seen louder protests on behalf of death row inmates convicted of heinous evil crimes than on behalf of so called 'unwanted' babies. It's not the babies fault that their mother doesn't want them... adopt them to parents that do want them.
Hey Lucid- You ask some great questions man, keep em coming.
But I have to know, whats up with the profile pic- dont tell me your a Cowboy fan!!!
Whats the story behind that? How does a Seattle guy become a Cowboy fan?
We'll have some fun with friendly trash talkin once NFL season starts.
I loved thier first round pick getting Felix Jones- combine him with Marion Barber and you got dynamic backfield.
Thanks again for the great questions.
Love stephs shout out-
"HD should have a "Biggest Loser" leaderboard!"
LOL too funny

Lucid - Glad to see you're getting along so well with my husband :)
You'll have a good chance to beat me on the leaderboards this week as I'll be out of town for the second half of the week and madly preparing for the first half. (Of course that just gives tri that much more time to play, so I don't know about your chance for #1!)
Glad you took my tip in Baby Mama. I made a nice 10k on that this morning! Unfortunately less confident on the current movie questions. Sigh.

Hey, Lucid, thanks for adding me as a friend... I didn't add you for competition but because you make cool questions... feel free to send me challenges whenever you want.
Stay dry (from the rain) in Seattle and have a beautiful day!

Friend Kruijs: some people were NOT careless. lucid has been giving us wonderful questions which we all enjoy, but we rely on him to be consistent or CLEARLY STATE -- as Tisha suggests -- that there is a second week film in the collection. Our obligation is to read the fine print clearly, I agree, but I don't think we should have to research to check each film to make sure that it is not a "second week" film.
I sincerely hope lucid continues these questions and reposts this one: but at least GIVE US THE FINE PRINT. We all depend on history and appreciate question authors who provide us with proper history and links.
Also please note that Tish is recommending REPOSTING THE QUESTION. I look forward to seeing the question again...

Thanks! Stupid week is over, although i do have some lingering stupid bets! Look at you on top of my leader board for weekly gains!

Hi lucid, wassup..I have been number 2 for ver a month, maybe you overlooked it.. ;-). But I've been having a bad time lately: one week of negative growth because I was away and now I have moved down 10K in 15 days...
Yes, I think my new plan is to bankrupt my account, bet my 20 crummy hubdub dollars a day, and spend the hours normally spent watching markets on creating questions, instead....
Fortunately, this STUPID week is almost over...I look to lose another H$2400 overnight, though, so you should be ahead of me soon.....Cheers!
Yeah, I'm watching you...remember earlier this week, I was at over 26KH$? Then I bet stupid, then stupid again, then a few more stupids, and by the end of this stupid week, you should be well ahead of me..... Thanks!
Hey lucid -
