So I see this headline in a news quiz I'm taking just now and there are four countries to choose from about where it happened...

I didn't know, although the only one I knew for sure it WOULDN't be was Canada.

Or so I thought.

Hi Mork how you going? Could you help me out with the Anheuser/InBev question? Dragon01 and I are about ready to bop each other electronically on the nose with regards what an outcome will be for that market. I'll accept your adjudication here as it seems Dragon has a bit vested - I have a total of $5000 on yes. I'll make a bit on it, not a lot though. thanks.

Once these bureaucracies (the HRCs) become entrenched it is devilishly difficult to abolish them. They Steyn case is one of many, these might also be of interest:

Mork, thanks for the link to the CBC article. Two things, that was the Canadian Human Right Commission, the BC Human Rights Commission has yet to rule. Also, I suspect Steyn & McLean's secretly want the decision to go against them so they can appeal to a court of law.

Hey Mork, perhaps you can take a crack at this one:

http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN2537887720080627?pageNumber=1&virtualBrandChannel=10179

It looks to be very newsworthy to me but I'm struggling to come up with a market on it, you're good at these. At first I was thinking some kind of a play on words with the syllables of axe, tax to reacts, sacks, hacks or facts, but I couldn't come up with anything I liked. But, now that BC is making this legal precedent it does seem that this trend could go either way, that more jurisdictions would jump on the band wagon, or that the citizenry of BC would indeed revolt. Have you got a read on this?

Just curious.

Very poignant, and here I'm cracking jokes about Leonidas. Anyway your comments remind me of my favorite quote from Mark Twain.."Travel is fatal to pride, prejudice and bigotry." If I could wave a magic wand I would ensure that as part of a thorough education that young children, mid teens, would have the chance to travel outside their own country, it would give them such an appreciation for other people and situations and be very humbling.

Truth! Kind of like the two headlines I found today about releasing the water from the Quake Lake:

Hey Kids todays lesson is about "spin"

Exhibit A. Headline from official Chinese news agency - "Official: China wins "decisive victory" in main quake lake drainage" @ http://www.chinaview.cn/

Exhibit B. Headline from International Herald Tribune - "Flooding spreads more destruction in town below 'quake lake'" @ http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/06/10/asia/quake.php

Same event.

I wonder if folks downstream from the "run-off" felt like it was a decisive victory?

Mork, I've considered this also for a market and was stymied as well. The whole think just makes me want to puke. Reminds me of a couple of things...Children of Men when woemn worldwide have become sterile, like the reference to women in Japan, also Freejack when Emilio Estevez is snatched from the past to the future because his body is not yet tainted like everyone else. Honestly, I think this is at least as grave a concern (pollution) as global warming, probably more so. I can get more motivated by this kind of thing than the possibility of manking induced global warming which may likely involve a significant natural element beyond our control. But making and tossing plastic IS something we could chose to do differently. I applaud you for thinking of adding this, it needs more exposure.... hmmmnnn can you find stats about how much plastic is produced annually? It's largely petroeum based, so perhaps the price of oil will finally apply some downward pressure. Personally I like to buy glass containers whenever possible vs. plastic and I also created a market once about Whole Foods discontinuing plastic bags, but I agree, it is a tough one. I wonder if there are stats anywhere that reference live birth rates of countries? I'll think about it some more, but thanks for sharing, feel free to send stuff my way any time.

BTW... I grew up in Washington state and attended Univ in BC and have spent a lot of time in Canada during my life, one thing I always appreciate is the general resepect for the enviromonment that y'all have, more apparent than what we have here in the states.

Hey Mork, I'll try staring at your picture later to see how it makes me feel....lol.

If you happen to see the Kung Fu Panda movie, then my market will make sense. Not to spoil it too much but the final battle between KFP and his nemisis involves a silly little "kung-fu" move in which KFP pinches the tiger's paw with just two fingers, flexing his pinky and uttering this word and the result is that the tiger is vanquished.

Mork,

I don't know if you've had a chance to catch up on the Steyn BC HRC case, but it looks as though one of these cases has finally entered the public forum to the extent that the commissioners might be forced to acquit MacLeans/Steyn or face public ridicule.

My understanding is that these commissions were established around 20+ years ago with the best intentions (one of my favorite sayings is, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions"), to provide a forum where folks who were discriminated against in "real" ways like employment discrimination based on sex, or housing discrimination based on race, could seek redress without needing to have the resources to hire an attorney. It appears that for many years the HRCs achieved their goals with little fanfare, little controversy, and some success.

<rant>
But recently it seems they have been hijacked by activists with an agenda. Maybe they were always controlled by activists with an agenda, but the agenda has changed in the past decade. Rather than be advocates for the downtrodden, they have become the commissars of political correctness, and cultural appeasement.

I hope you & your fellow Canadians can band together to achieve, "true patriot love, for all thy sons (& daughters) command".

</rant>

Regards,
An Average American

I hit a button on my mouse which posted that shout, but it pretty much sums up my feelings about these cases. I think it's a time for Canadians to stand up for free speech, against embedded bureaucracies and political correctness gone wild.

</rant>
sent 13 weeks ago
Heh, I'd claim my role was more like anti-spyware. You may have seen this statistic already, but the Canadian HRC's have a 100% conviction rate for "hate speech". You might want to consider moving south, the US is far from the Federalist system envisioned by our founding fathers, but despite the Patriot Act (ugh!) I think we are still a few degrees of limited government ahead of Canada.

Your national anthem is so _strong_ :

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Thank you for enlightening me of the plights of Mark Steyn. As a Canadian I found this considerably upsetting. I wonder if complainants like these have researched our laws on ways to be manipulated better than none other. I see our tax dollars being devoured by a bureaucracy intent only on destroying the ability to speak freely, with the livelihood of a talented reporter being left in it's wake. These tax dollars are being robbed from their ability to do any good and being used to feed these smug lawyers whose education was probably not their first major benefit of immigrating to Canada.

I like how Rex Murphy explains it here.

Heh! It's not secret because you told me about it on a fairly public forum, not because everyone knows about it! I'm not Canadian, but I urge you to read up on the Steyn and Levant tribunals to calibrate the rate at which your right to free speech is being usurped by an unaccountable, unelected, bureaucracy. It makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up every time I read about it ... freedom of speech sacrificed in the name of political correctness!
sent 13 weeks ago
These are two patriotic Canadians whose stories you should know, Ezra Levant and Mark Steyn. Each has been the target of Muslim activists, using the so-called Human Rights Commissions in Canada, for publicly exercising their right to freedom of speech.

Steyn: http://steynian.wordpress.com/
Levant: http://ezralevant.com/

No Canadian should stand aside as their right to free speech is trampled by religious bigots and career bureaucrats.

Thanks for the (not so) secret weapon!

In the past I've been a bit reckless creating questions, sometimes not completely understanding the topics I was asking about.
The baseball one about Ortez calling his shot; a fine example. Ive never heard of big papi before.
I think the site has come to the point where My knowledge of American government etc. is limiting my capacity to pose questions in those subjects. It seems many new users have enthusiastically been creating mostly very impressive questions and filling any gap I may be leaving.

You're cracking me up with the FFFs. I had close friends in Toronto, never seemed to have the frequency of weirdness that has been happening in Texas though this past month. enjoy the markets, keep 'em coming!

I agree that this guy seems to be quite a "wak-job"
I did some more searching, as the site you sent seems to me, to have an agenda.
I ran across this article that was in USA Today:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/2008-03-07-mccain-hagee_N.htm
And this statement from McCain:
http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/News/PressReleases/9af1cb39-a999-4e38-93a9-541660174ba4.htm
Ya know, what I find so interesting about US politics this time year...The campaigns don't really het up until after the conventions.
Hope your well,
Erik

Hi Mork - can you clarify this question please:

http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Who_will_be_televised_crying_next_5801/view

Discussion as to whether photos of people crying that are televised are enough to settle, etc.

Cheers,
Tisha

I'll guess i'll take a shot at your avatar (it seems as though that is required on your "shout out");
A late 70's/early 80's dream sequence of you (mork) kissing Mindy. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/morkandmindy.html

This avatar is kind of neat! The transforming bird (or whatever) was still the best...

Hey, I really appreciate all of the challenges you send me and want to say thanks! Your questions are really good and very interesting. Right now, I'm concentrating on not "losing my shirt" today on Obama and the Indiana Primary. I think a lot of us could get massacred on this one....

You're welcome, Mork :) Well, they were waiving the mandatory five-business-day custody; but now the judgment, "400 pages long, needs to be translated from Spanish.." It's still possible, AFAICT.

that's "McCain in a fit of rage"
not me. you get it.
sent 19 weeks ago
Yes, I did. I have to admit, I was in a surly mood. I only planned on having it there for a while. (until someone noticed - thanks for the pseudo-ego boost - I am recognized)
Anyway, I'll change it back to McCain in a fit of rage. One thing's for sure, whomever holds the office for the next four years, it should prove entertaining.

mork,

I was just about to challenge all my friends to predict this question you created: http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Will_a_mousepad_with_the_controversial_logo_of_UKs_Office_of_Government_Commerce_OGC_become_available_on_ebay_before_weeks_end_6195/view

but you beat me to it 8^)
