I appreciate your comments about commercial timing, thanks. I agree, there ARE very few single event commercials. Did you happen to catch the montage (sp?) commercials by Nike in the Olympics, they moved me, very artistic, clever and a flurry on images that invoked some of my best and most vibrant Olympic memories. This kind of creativity is something I aspire to.
Valornhonor -- I think I understand the sentiment of your message, and I don't disagree with your view on the timing of it...
My sense of that sentiment is that it's like sending someone a birthday card -- better for it to arrive a day early, then have it be received a day late. And perhaps what I was saying seemed like "it either has to arrive at the exact time of their birth anniversary, or it's imperfect".
In fact, my comment was apolitical. I'm a big fan of (have a keen awareness of, and appreciation for) "single event commercials" as an advertising strategy -- and my comments, while made about a political example, were based in the, perhaps less volatile, advertising context.
These days ;-) there are fewer (and fewer) single-event commercials then in days gone by. And I understand many of the reasons why... and, at the same time, it makes those commercials that are made for a single event all the more outstanding (to me).
Probably the best one I've seen over the past year, is the 60-second commercial Coca Cola made expressly for the Macy's Day Parade! Maybe you've seen it -- it's in the "Emmy Award for Outstanding Commercial" question I made here on Hubdub.
So, the "comment I didn't make" within my comment ;-) was ... "imagine what the reaction would have been, had Obama completed his acceptance speech, and the commercial networks immediately aired John McCain's 'Congratulations Commercial' ! What would the buzz have been then amongst the pundits!"
I don't pay the bills -- nor do I know if such a strategy is "a good one" or if an embargo on secrecy is possible anymore to effect such a presentation -- but that was the sentiment behind my comment.
Thanks for taking the time to let me know how you felt!

Hey NW,
I'm fascinated by your comment, "The blush soon came off the rose however, for releasing it early -- and, as you posted, it's already on YouTube. ", wondering, what would have been, in your opinion, a completely non-offensive time/date for this ad? Seems that this exact language in the video would have seemed odd if he said, "Dear Obama, two or three days ago you were nominated, congrats... blah, blah, blah." I can't help but shake the notion that some of the Obama folks are very thin-skinned about scrutiny of any kind and now are making wholesale accusations about trying to orchestrate when their opponent can say things, and what they're allowed to say, at all. By my observation the Obama team has declined the McCain's team for a schedule of town hall meetings, which is their right to decline certainly if they don't feel that it's to their advantage, but now some of their ranks seem to be bristling at everything McCain does, even this apparent compliment. Was it genuine? Who knows? Was it refreshing in it's lack of mud? I dare say... yes.

Hi newswrangler-
TY and sorry it took so long to reply. The first couple days I was getting used to everything and felt a little overwhelmed. I have gotten in more of a routine now, and a better understanding of managing the time I do spend on hubdub. I hope you, or anyone else didn't feel as if I was purposely ignoring anyone.
Looking forward to working with the team anyone possible to help out. Let me know if you have any pointers for me, as you are one of the best at what you do.

Thank you for your note about my soundtrack market & Billboard, I just checked it again, late this evening after building this market early this morning, it appears to be identical, I think it does not update through the day.
@ newswrangler,
Thank you for the updated post about the suicide bombing in Iraq, apparently your account involved more precision than the first reports. Do you mind if I read the entire article? Can you reply with the website? Thanks.

any question about the EURO quarterfinals semifinals and finals do not need a tie option as long as they are about the final result of the match. A tie can occur after regular playing time (as in every match) but because of the knock out phase a winner than is determined by an extra time of 30 min and eventually even through a penalty shoot out.

You're so wrapped up in the whole HD market perspective 8^)
I decided several weeks ago that I would devote my limited spare time to reading the news, before predicting it. I can't say whether this has helped, or hurt, me on HD, but it has probably clouded my judgment on the Michigan/Florida issue. The mantra is that prediction markets can actually, you know, predict things ... we will see!

As far as the Michigan/Florida thing goes I heard an interview with unpledged Democratic superdelegate and co-chair of the rules committee, James Roosevelt, in which he said that he, and both campaigns, are committed to enfranchising the democratic voters of Michigan and Florida. He said the rules state they should lose 50% of their delegates for having an illegal primary, but that would probably the basis from which negotiations commence. Based on that I thought I'd take a flier on delegates are awarded. It could easily become another Spitzer (or EBay Spy Satellite 8^).

I wish I could create an interesting question about the 2008 Scripps National Spelling Bee -- it's tomorrow night, live starting at 8 pm ET.
The best I can come up with is "will the winner be a boy or a girl?" { BORING!!! }
Maybe one of you have an idea/question you can create!

Hello, newsrangler!
Did you wrangle the news again? Hehe!
The McCain joke was made in June 1998, not June 2000. Is this the joke you were referring to?

I predicted "No" on both questions this time thinking that all good things must come to pass, and my H$200 predictions grossed a whopping H$507 (which _was_nearly the activity on both questions 8^()
I made way more H$ in predicting Kubica for pole (First Pole on pole in F1 8^)

You make a good point re the suspend dates newswrangler and I can understand how annoying you've been finding it these past few days. It is too arbitrary right now and we need to pin down an official policy. I've posted it to getsatisfaction for user input: http://getsatisfaction.com/hubdub/topics/suspend_v_settlement_times
Thanks for flagging it. We really appreciate your input.

Hi newswrangler
Just wanted to update you on the painting question that was unsuspended yesterday. The suspend date was set a lot earlier than the question could be settled, so rather than tie everyone in unnecessarily, the date was changed. The admin involved should have left a comment but didn't unfortunately. Shouldn't happen again.
All the best, Lesley.

Twas' the night before New Quarter
And all through the house
Not a creature was stirring
Not even all those nice Scottish Lads and Lasses in a different timezone who sleep while all the really neat stuff happens on American tv, although they never seem to miss the superbowl or debates LIVE...
I hope that JOLLY OLD SAINT NEW QUARTER is good to you!
Season's Greetings and Best Wishes
To My Friends!

What I'm saying:
1.The date is always one week late, a fact I realized after creating the question.
2. I don't know why. Possibly, since the list is done weekly, they put the date one week late (like some news magazines send out an issue dated 7th January on 1 st January).

Yeah, its normal I meant for the question to be for a week, so I put the suspend date for a week after the date given, only to realise that the list was dated one week later than the actual date. So, yeah, its okay!

Hey truth/newswrangler!
CONGRATS ON MAKING THE TOP 20!! It couldn't happen to a nicer hubdubber...
CONGRATS ON MAKING THE TOP 20!! It couldn't happen to a nicer hubdubber...
The Olympics question looks appropriate for a HubDerivative, but the IOC isn't deciding the winning bid until October 2009, which could make it kind of a long running question. I'll think about it. Of course you could create it yourself; I might have created the first HubDerivative, but that doesn't mean I'm the only HubDubbber allowed to create them.
They edited my HubDerivative, thanks for pointing it out. Now you need to start a GetSatisfaction thread about how the admins edited a question and completely changed its meaning8^)
What a speculator! I thought you were an advocate of serious news prediction! I could start a whole new class of HubDerivatives, "Will the HubDub Community Correctly Predict (Some Unidentified Hubdub Question)?". But how will it be settled? I predict a lengthy thread on GetSatisfaction about what _I_ intended 8^)
I'm hoping for admin clarifaction, or at least voiding!
I'm hoping for admin clarifaction, or at least voiding!
Thanks for the heads up! It's like emailing a spreadsheet to someone, and forgetting to attach the spreadsheet ... I hate it when I do that!
In association with jerry I put up a discussion on HUBDUB playing guidelines for rookies on getsatisfaction:
http://getsatisfaction.com/hubdub/topics/the_golden_rules_for_successfully_playing_the_hubdub
Counting on your contribution! Thanks in advance!

TruthWrangler, Since the HD admins proposal was rife with issues, and my proposal had issues as well, I've started a new discussion about quarterly HD issues @ http://getsatisfaction.com/hubdub/topics/hubdub_quarterly_reset_issues. Please contribute your thoughts.
TruthWrangler (or whatever), I proposed a different quarter ending scheme on the GetSatisfaction thread. I'd love to have your input.
LOL news/truth wrangler. No matter your identity, you wrangle for the truth. Props, AnAverageAmerican
What did you do to truthwrangler? He was my friend! Sniff, sniff. Must be a case of mistaken identity ... or identity theft ... or loss of identity 8^)
