I agree. It's a pattern
@f_o_f: yeah that is funny.
I saw this news & thought it was scary (from back in December of 2006):

I hope FEMA does not get involved. People used to help each other get through disasters. Now a lot of places people are looking to the state and local government to save them. Then with Katrina in N.O. the locals there let FEMA do the heavy lifting, in order to free the citizens up to loot more effectively.
@curios
I am impressed that the American people tolerate outsiders always lecturing them on how to conduct their business. They get unsolicited advice from every corner of the globe about their politics, policies, taxes, laws, court decisions, law enforcement, ad infinitum. I think we should let them run their internal affairs exactly how they please, since it is their business. They are a very sucessful country and didn't need advice in order to become that way.

Condoleezza Rice should not be anywhere near the White House. She has failed in foreign policy in the middle east, russia, south america... while she is a smart lady, she simply doesn't have the firm convictions it takes to be a policy maker.
President George W. Bush should be Man of the Year, in my opinion. He fits markc's definition exactly. Bold earth-changing leadership... I thank God for our president, even if TIME chooses to ignore him :-)
I would be nervous if I lived in Canada right about now... Osama and Obama both have activist friends that blow stuff up, and are proud about it!
Yeah, he and Jeremiah Wright ought to move to Iran (or Columbia University), where that kind of vitrol is mainstream.

I think he was referring to a "Barry Soetoro", who is the person that Barack Obama gets to do his miracles for him when he is too busy to do it himself.

From one of the links in the "Related News" side bar:
While the mass media, Al Gore and politicized bodies like the IPCC scaremonger about the perils of global warming and demand the poor and middle class pay CO2 taxes, both hard scientific data and circumstantial evidence points to a clear cooling trend.
How man-made global warming advocates will spin this one remains to be seen - maybe they will just continue to adopt their current tactic by claiming that any geological or weather event whatsoever, be it hurricanes, earthquakes, droughts or floods, temperature increase or decrease, and even a 30 per cent growth of the polar ice cap - is a result of that evil life-giving gas that we exhale - CO2.

From Richmond Times-Dispatch, Monday, July 7, 2008
Dear Editor, Times-Dispatch:
Each year I get to celebrate Independence Day twice. On June 30 I celebrate my independence day, and on July 4, I celebrate America 's. This year is special, because it marks the 40th anniversary of my independence.
On June 30, 1968, I escaped Communist Cuba, and a few months later, I was in the United States to stay. That I happened to arrive in Richmond on Thanksgiving Day is just part of the story, but I digress.
I've thought a lot about the anniversary this year. The election-year rhetoric has made me think a lot about Cuba and what transpired there. In the late 1950s, most Cubans thought Cuba needed a change, so when a young leader came along, every Cuban was at least receptive.
When the young leader spoke eloquently and passionately and denounced the old system, the press fell in love with him. They never questioned who his friends were or what he really believed in. When he said he would help the farmers and the poor and bring free medical care and education to all, everyone followed. When he said he would bring justice and equality to all, everyone said, 'Praise the Lord.' And when the young leader said, 'I will be for change and I' ll bring you change,' everone yelled, 'Viva Fidel!'
But nobody asked about the change, so by the time the executioner's guns went silent, the people's guns had been taken away. By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry, and oppressed. By the time everyone received their free education, it was worth nothing. By the time the press noticed, it was too late, because they were now working for him. By the time the change was finally implemented, Cuba had been knocked down a couple of notches to Third-World status. By the time the change was over, more than a million people had taken to boats, rafts, and inner tubes. You can call those who made it ashore anywhere else in the world the most fortunate Cubans. And now I'm back to the beginning of my story.
Luckily, we in America would never fall for a young leader who promised change without asking, what change? How will you carry it out? What will it cost America ?
Would we?

Search the text yourself - the link you posted never has the words "the state of the union is strong" or anything similar. Only the page title claims to be that. Search it yourself, and compare it to every State of the Union speech given since then.
The 2001 State of the Union address should have been made by the outgoing president (Clinton), but no outgoing president has made a State of the Union speech since Carter delivered his written one in 1981.

The 20th Amendment of the US Constitution, Setion one reads: "The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January, and the terms of Senators and Representatives at noon on the 3d day of January, of the years in which such terms would have ended if this article had not been ratified; and the terms of their successors shall then begin."

Yeah, I agree. The cease fire agreement gives someone a paper to wave around and prove that these events must not be happening because "it says so right here"! - it is analogous to Baghdad Bob http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrXhxmQJSS0
@biken1
Thanks for that link too.
What concerns me the most is that there are no stated goals, such as consensus as to what temperature it should be and why, what ranges of various gas concentrations are safe and why, etc.
But both Barack Obama and John McCain agree that it is a big problem and want to spend our money and use our resources to "fix" it, before there are convincing guidlines and definitions.
I feel robbed everytime I look at the amounts I pay in taxes already, if you know what I mean. So I want clarity - more than ambitious governement programs!

Well, if the percentages were the problem, perhaps Destry could point you to a source that he feels is correct
maybe this will be more likely in 2009.
Barak Obama is the American version of George Galloway. If he is elected, expect less fear of consequences on the part of these people for any funny stuff they dream up.

@destry: not accurate? On what basis? I found this:
http://www.arcadeathome.com/newsboy.phtml?Barack_Hussein_Obama_-_Arab-American,_only_6.25%25_African
Barack Hussein Obama is not half black. If elected, he would be the first Arab-American President, not the first black President. Barack Hussein Obama is 50% Caucasian from his mother's side and 43.75% Arabic and 6.25% African Negro from his father's side. While Barack Hussein Obama's father was from Kenya, his father's family was mainly Arabs. Barack Hussein Obama's father was only 12.5% African Negro and 87.5% Arab (his father's birth certificate even states he's Arab, not African Negro).
What does this mean? Maybe nothing. But, why is Obama trying to hide this? Why does he try to hide is middle name? Why does he try to hide the religious Muslim school he attented as a child in Indonesia? Why doesn't he set the record straight that he wouldn't be the first black President? Why so many cover-ups and hiding of the truth?
Further, at only 6.25% African Negro, would he even be the first President who was part black? Not at all! Our 3rd President, Thomas Jefferson was our first part black President. And he's not alone, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge were also part black.
President Andrew Jackson was the son of an Irish woman who married a black man. Andrew Jackson was such a high percentage black that his oldest brother was sold as a slave!
President Abraham Lincoln was the illegitimate son of an African man, he had very dark skin and coarse hair and his mother also allegedly came from an Ethiopian tribe. His heritage fueled so much controversy that Lincoln was nicknamed "Abraham Africanus the First" by his opponents.
President Warren Harding never even denied claims that he was black, because he had black ancestors between both sets of parents and he attended Iberia College, a school founded to educate fugitive slaves.
President Calvin Coolidge was proud of his heritage and claimed his mother was dark because of mixed Indian ancestry. Coolidge's mother's maiden name was "Moor" and in Europe the name "Moor" was given to all blacks just as "Negro" was used in America.

oops, I didn't wait long enough: http://www.hubdub.com/m13643/Will_the_DNC_ticket_be_two_Arab_guys
I searched and could not find a similar question for Barack - about his ticket being two white guys. Why is race always a question for John McCain only, and not for Barack?
While I agree it is necessary to have a guest worker program, and I hope that Mexican nationals have a priority in any such program, we cannot escape the fact that every illegal immigrant that is here has already broke the law, and a series of wrongs do not make a right. To overlook this is to give a slap in the face of all law-abiding immigrants who waited in line to get into the country.
Also, it is important to notice that this is a problem in many countries - for example, England, France, Spain, Israel, and Mexico all have people in their countries illegally & it has never brought run-away prosperity nor record lows in crime rates.

Arctic ice refuses to melt as ordered http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/08/15/goddard_arctic_ice_mystery/
The Arctic melt season is nearly done for this year. The sun is now very low above the horizon and will set for the winter at the North Pole in five weeks. And none of these dire predictions have come to pass. Yet there is, however, something odd going on with the ice data.

@autotom: If national pride is a problem for you, I recommend that you don't go near any World Cup Football matches. On the other hand, that is what I love about them. The spectators are brimming full of national pride - it is a good thing, and I would not begrudge that from anyone!
I feel that I know Americans pretty well, and in fact I am disappointed with the number of Americans who do not openly display their national pride. When I see it, I encourage it - they have good reasons to feel national pride, like every other country. If you don't like their TV, just watch Al Jezerra or BBC. Their announcers are un-avoidable for comment. (And I like BBC)

@bigken1 - Karl Marx authored a book on economics...
It is obvious that climate changes - dramatically too, without human help. We know there were several ice ages, and that there have been times when vineyards were cultivated in Greenland - now that is a climate change!
Then there is the famous case of the frozen mamoth in Siberia that was found with warm weather herbs in it's digestive system.
We can agree, I think, that the sudden change in the climate did not have anything to do with homo sapiens driving SUVs around! To believe this human induced global warming stuff seems to require a Ph.D and an accute sense of when to turn off deductive reasoning.

Yeah, we have a bunch of commetators and politicians today that try to figure out how the US constitution does not apply to U.S. Citizens, (for example the 2nd amendment), and at the same time try to make it apply to non-citizen
terrorists
. They begging us to ask them the question "how would you act differently if you hated America?"
@pepe, yeah, because of taxes... Germany charges ecological and sales taxes for each litre of gasoline. Gas is generally less expensive in Germany than in the United States, if you exclude the tax.
So, the Germany people can do something about this - if they want to elect more tax-friendly people into office.

They won't be in Canada! http://www.edmontonsun.com/News/Canada/2008/08/08/6387441.html
That's their description, at least - I notice the picture is of John F Kerry, which doesn't prove their primary point... only the secondary one that Kerry's photo op didn't go so well!
@onedave: ok, that helps. Where I live they issue CCWs, so I didn't think about the police preventing crimes with 911 calls.
What would be an example of a crime that occurs because 911 operators are bogged down?
Wouldn't the crime happen because criminals were practising their trade?

@dieseldog he may get his day in court yet! http://www.nationalenquirer.com/update_john_edwards_affair_criminal_complaint_filed/celebrity/65209
These people are already at war - they are muslim terrorists, and have killed over 120,000 people in the area already. The stories coming out of southern Phils are almost on par with those in the middle east.
Maybe she will be president... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8gdU_1MM44
@piterwilson: the muslim terrorists in the middle-east use ambulances with the red crescent on them in order to move amunition around. These days war is not between law abiding, treaty observing nations, but with thugs that will use any means possible to inflict damage. I feel it is naive to think that governments can effectively keep their citizenry safe without sometimes using some of these methods, however unfortunate it may be.
@dieseldog - I agree. And the rising unemployment rates are the Democrats fault anyway... every conservative in the country was warning that raising the minimum wage will raise unemployment, and congress did it anyway. Now they try to blame it on the President some how!
If I were to choose for him, I would have to go with Kennebunkport - at least in the summer. That is a beautiful place, with a small town atmosphere.
Hmmm... Barack is troubled by:
A Liberal columnist mentioning his big ears,
People noticing his middle name, (but not when he mentions his middle name)
A Liberal newspaper's front page cartoon,
When someone else compares him to Paris Hilton (but not when he makes the comparison himself)
I have trouble imagining how he would handle the amount of criticism that is leveled at our President every day - God bless George W Bush!

@newswrangler - I would interpret that as a favorable comparison, in that he was saying he was out-shining Paris Hilton.
However, on further thought, I am thinking that the "favorable" requirement is not necessary for this market.

@intlibber
Good subtle point there! LOL
What's funny is that it is lost on these geniuses on the left - in England they are going after "knife crime" now, just like they did with "gun crime". So they are taking away knives or talking about registering them, and treating crimes as more serious when there was a knife present... Still no general support among the "elitists" for brining back the death penalty. Someday we are going to have to figure out that crimes are commited by criminals, not by tools.
Good subtle point there! LOL
What's funny is that it is lost on these geniuses on the left - in England they are going after "knife crime" now, just like they did with "gun crime". Still no general support among the "elitists" for brining back the death penalty. Someday we are going to have to figure out that crimes are commited by criminals, not by tools.
@destry, I agree with dieseldog and taternutz. In my opinion, an admin should have an almost laissez faire attitude, letting questions stand whenever possible, instead of rewriting, changing key words, criticizing, and discouraging others from creating questions.
This is a great site, with lots of potential - let's hope lots of people find out about it and enjoy whatever aspect they like most about the site :-)

I think we let people change what words mean. The word 'torture' is one of those words... it doesn't mean making people feel uncomfortable or embarassed! (I'm thinking about what "news" reporters ask us to try to get excited about in Abu Garab, or Guantanamo)
For instance, check out this video of what happened to an american citizen who decided to live in the USSR:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_60B0xgGvZQ
While history shows that there were times that the Native Americans were not treated fairly, it went both ways, and they are lucky that in their case they were dealing with the United States government, instead of China, the USSR, Iran, North Korea, or the "Palistinians".
So, my point is that words do mean things, and we shouldn't cheapen them by changing their meaning for political or social purposes. There is no reason that President Bush should apologize for anything, when living conditions now are better than anyone's wildest imagination could have conjured before the Mayflower.

Erik is correct, the official way of defining a recession is negative growth in two successive quarters.

Yeah, good points. I notice when I give money to someone personally, they generally say "thank you". When the government takes my money and gives it to someone else, they generally just want more, and try to make the tax-payer feel guilty for having more money than the welfare case.
Now Barack's plan takes this to a Global level - scary stuff in my opinion!

Yeah, offending the "PC" crowd is a noble effort, in my opinion - I think Barack just accidently did something that I semi-approve of!
He should be certain the person in question is, in fact, a sweetie... we wouldn't want him misleading people now, would we? LOL

I am disappointed this question was voided for that reason. Rational people will agree that if Obama takes a shower in the month of August, it is not likely to be reported in a major mainstream news source. (Chris Dodd even got in trouble for noticing that Obama was "clean"!)
Yeah, I agree. I thought it was an interesting question, and since they are not major events, it is possible that a major mainstream news source would not report this & that justifies the "None of the above during August" option...
Yeah, I hope this question stays too - I think questions should be allowed by default, unless there is some real serious problem of some kind
@onedave, that is correct. The vice president only can assume presidental powers upon the president's "Death, Resignation, or Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties of the said Office", according to article 2, section 1, clause 6 of the U. S. Constitution.
@kruijs - good guess :-)
By the way, I am not real excited about any candidate in this election, but Barack scares me!

@curios - this man's speech strained facts or made up history whole cloth. I would say a "brilliant" speech needs to be factual!
Instead, he claimed that "many planes were forced to turn back" from the Berlin Airlift because of the bad weather, that "The size of our [US] forces was no match for the much larger Soviet Army... All that stood in the way was Berlin.", that "you, the German people, tore down that wall" (as if they acted by themselves)... and a host of other things that were, at best, mischevious, or worse, bald faced lies
I would not call that brilliant

Yeah, if you look at who these "conspiracy theorists" are, they are pretty much all nut-cases.
Even congress, with much to gain if this were true, and with a fair amount of power and funding, still hasn't tried to advance these kinds of theories.
When I look at President Bush, I see a man who loves his country, and these irrational types of people who advance these theories are painting with the wrong end of the paint-brush.

@valornhonor, yes that is correct. If he is charged with a crime, this will settle as yes.
@chatarra, I agree - the "men in blue" are some of our finest citizens. I think the few "bad apples" need to be brought to justice so that the reputation of the rest remains unblemished...

@curios Life is rough: there are so many ways of spelling it improperly, and only one way of doing it right
I was in Colombia when this happened. People did ask this question, but it seems unlikely that the FARC would willingly let two of their own men (who were wanted for crimes commited) to be captured as part of a deal like that. Also, they had a very extensive back-up plan for something like 30 helicopters to come in and intervene if the FARC figured out that they were being duped & were to turn violent.

@cognos, I don't have the answer for you, but I know that we used to be told that an acre of corn gives off 4,000 gallons of water per day in evaporation.
You know all the morning fog that you can get from time to time in agricultural areas? That comes from moisture evaporating off of the ground too. So there is a lot of evaporating going on, and much of it is natural.

@curios I don't understand why people get so violently deranged when talking about our President. There never will be any president that we will agree with 100%, but that does not merit the torid outpour of hate and crazy assertions that we see and hear on such a regular basis. Compare him with Venezuela's president Hugo Chavez, or Zimbabwe's president Robert Mugabe - there are not nearly the outbursts of vitrol about them, and they are evil men.

As a side note, the electorial college is a good thing. If the popular vote were counted, the candidates would only campaign in New York and California, ignoring the needs of the rest of the country.

The irony is, the only people McCain can count on to vote for him are the very Republicans he despises -- at least those of us who can get drunk enough on Election Day to pull the lever for him. In fact, we should organize parties around the country where Republicans can get drunk so they can vote for McCain. We can pass out clothespins with his name as a reminder and slogan-festooned vomit bags. The East Coast parties can post the number of drinks necessary for the task to help the West Coast parties. If you happen to be in Phoenix some time, there is a spanish AM talk station (I think it is 740 on the dial)... it is so entertaining to hear them talk about Sheriff Joe - not a whole lot of love there! Also they will often make announcements about where the illegal roundups are happening. They are quite open about everything, probably because they think "Americans" can't understand Spanish...

This part of the article was significant:
De Vires is far from unusual in seeking medical treatment in the U.S. Even Canadian government officials send patients across the border, increasingly looking to American medicine to deal with their overload of patients and chronic shortage of care.
Since the spring of 2006, Ontario's government has sent at least 164 patients to New York and Michigan for neurosurgery emergencies — defined by the Globe and Mail newspaper as "broken necks, burst aneurysms and other types of bleeding in or around the brain." Other provinces have followed Ontario's example.

The Kyoto Protocol was more about trying to get the United States to reliquish some more of its soverignty than the environment. It would have cost us incredible amounts of money in lost revenues, besides giving the international community an ever increasing voice over what they think we should be able to do or not do inside of our borders.
Even the Bill Clinton/Al Gore team knew better than to ratify that treaty...

Yes, I absolutely believe that the free market would let us live long and prosper. When people are given a choice, the majority do tend to choose living long a prospering. Free markets are all about giving choices to consumers.
The problem that you mentioned about favoring those who have power tends to be a problem when these people are in a position of power (government solution give power to these few...)
Consider some extremes: Mr Mugabe, in a position of extreme power (or Kim Il-sung, Hugo Chavez etc) and compare them to extremely successful, such as Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, Eric Schmidt. Which group would you consider the larger risk to society? It my opinion, we should encourage everyone to do well for themselves, and being successful never hurt anybody.
People succeed in business by providing solutions to needs. When there is competition, there are choices. Customers will choose based on price, quality, avalability, etc, and those entreprenuers who provide the best choices succeed. That is their reward for providing their service in the free market. It works every time, and I have complete confidence that it will continue to work in the future. It works well in the United States, and we provide the world with one of the few examples of how the free market works, thus our "leading role" in showing how to live better. The vast majority of other nations are in varying stages of being examples of how big government fails.

You and I both know those are not freedoms you listed. Would you choose to eat unsafe food, drink dirty water, etc?
The free market would bring use these things, - say you can choose between brand X's safe food and Y's unsafe food. Which would you choose?
I live in a city where we have a fair about of high air pollution advisories. I know what I am talking about when I say that I would sooner breathe the air in my city on a pollution advisory day than the air in Mexico City, Bejing, Sao Paulo, etc on one of their "normal" days.
Look who is behind these environmental groups. Socialists like Al Gore, ex-comunists like Gorbechev, criminals like Charles Manson... and why do they all aim straight for the United States to tell us what we should not be doing? You would think an honest enviromentally conscious person would be in Mexico, Brazil, China --- where the problems are orders of magnitude greater than they are here! But no, they are here, I am convinced, to chip away at our liberties.
I believe I am a reasonable person. You can call me ignorant if you like. That still doesn't change the fact that our freedoms are being restricted, and the worst problems in the world are not being addressed.

I just looked at http://www.americansolutions.com/ and 1,088,450 people have signed the petition already!
Someone should ask these shysters what temperature they want it to be
Any normal person can see that something would be wrong if climates didn't change... that is what climates do! Hence the saying "changable as the weather" etc..

Now, if she were a muslim terrorist that hijacked planes, they would let her right in, no problem.

@aaa Speaking of Tim Russert, this video is on topic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELoKGvOwSI4
Would a vice president choice of Richard Shelby of Alabama or Ben Nighthorse Campbell of Colorado settle this question as a "Yes"? They are both Republicans now, but have been Democrats in the past
This would actually be very typical of John McCain. He is always talking about "bi-partisian" stuff.
I was just reading his letter to Barack, where they evidently had been talking about bi-partisian support for a bill:

@theonecalledmichael:
Ok then, can you provide 3 examples of "save the environment" laws or proposals that give us more personal liberties than we had before?

@keyeshoveden The environment here in America is fine. We have cleaner air here than in China, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, etc...
The whole environment questions is really a way to try to control people and take away our liberties. Don't fall for the trap

@theonecalledmichael - I agree that alternatives would be a good thing. I can't stand the fact that these big government types are getting in the way of people using alternatives. It ought to be encouraged for economic and national security reasons.
I found this the other day: (somewhat misleading title...)

Another victim of government schools...
Being this dumb doesn't come naturally - one would need to have a Masters Degree and a Teaching Certificate.

The title of that book is in itself damning, since it came pretty much straight from Jeremiah Wright - Baracks "spiritual advisor"...
How about these points:
"Even if we taught a kid to read tomorrow, it would be YEARS before he graduated..."
"Even if we started a space program tomorrow, it would be years before we reached the moon..."
"Even if we declare independance on July 4, 1776, it would be years before we defeat the British..."
... and so forth, for EVERY major milestone in life or the history of this country.

@cognos - those are important points. It reminds me again of Jim Jones in San Francisco, like I said before. Scary stuff.
Also, to V&H's quote, I don't want my neighbors or "village" to care about me or my stuff. That is what friends are for... I believe that "good fences make good neighbors"!

The background for this question is biased, although many people are misled to commonly believe these things.
There have never been large scale environmental disasters anywhere that were caused by drilling. In fact, drilling close to home is good for the environment. The majority of environmental disasters are caused by spills, and tankers that carry oil long distances increase the risk of another environmental disaster.
Drilling closer to home means less exposure to that risk, in addition to a supply that would be less dependant on a politically volatile part of the world.
