If they do file any lawsuits, this question is going to be suspended for a very loooonng time...
Thank you Dean! I'm glad to know that I haven't lost my marbles and my memory isn't so bad after all!
Thank you for the clarification. I see that it has been written into the history.

I'm still fascinated that you say that Hamas is preparing for war, Olmert says that it is only a matter of time, election of the hawkish Benjamin Netanyahu will also lead to war, and yet the "will never happen" option is set at 50%? As a matter of interest, You don't believe that anything will happen between Hamas and Israel? I'm interested...
The celebrations are over the Indian Navy sinking a Thai fishing trawler, probably the slowest moving (and least armed) floating rowboat in the region. Really brave macho bravado stuff...I'll bet the Indian Navy could blow the rubber duckies out of your bathtub...!
Very good points, friend chatarra:

"Well, I don't know it as a fact, just as an observation in a broken pattern." Excellent observation.
Good question! I believe that she will go to the capitals of both Indian and Pakistan, but not Mumbai. She would only go to Mumbai if there was a scene of large-scale American carnage there...
This question has not been settled in three and a half weeks. Illinois voters VOTED DOWN a Constitutional Convention at this time:

I agree with deanthoreau that this is sad beyond words, but it isn't new.

It's called mass hysteria: a crowd OUT OF CONTROL. A crowd is totally focused on SOMETHING, but NOT what is going on around them. We have all read how often this happens at British and European soccer matches...at times, a FEW people get trampled at one game, during mass "football hysteria". Sports officials have been trying to find a way to control this phenomenon for years, with not much success...

It's no secret that Americans have turned Black Friday into a "sport"...
More HOT AIR than energy here!...should work for balloons...
Horrific: The death toll is already 119, and there are still unreleased hostages and so many criticially injured...

The hostage situation might not be over in the next 36 hours...
@dean and jenni:

Not easy to word, but we all understand you. Hilarious question, and I'm betting she will unwire her jaw herself after a few exasperating Christmas parties, especially where everyone grins and sniggers...
@all my friends:

I can explain the confusion. Before the 1970s, Woolworths in the United States was one of the leading "dime stores", somewhat equivalent to the dollar stores today but on a different and more primitive scale. It was always great fun to go to Woolworths and find fascinating small items: a scissors, an inexpensive china figurine, a 25 cent toy, etc. And an old-fashioned soda fountain.

Next I encountered Woolworths in Nairobi, Kenya in 1969 and was quite startled to see that it was a very different type of business outside of the United States. When I eventually moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, I became better acquainted with Woolworths (which was very popular and everywhere): a good everyday wear clothing store, which added an excellent food delicatessen and great gift items. To an American's way of thinking, it would be closer to Kohl's than to Sears with an outstanding food delicatessen thrown in. I never quite figured out the sales correlation between lower middle class inexpensive clothing and elite upper class food.

Clothes were well made to the point of being indestructible: the only way to get rid of Woolie's clothing was to take it out and shoot it or give it to charity (so that you could get something else)...But if you were invited to someone's home for dinner and you heard that the cook had been shopping that afternoon with her "Auntie Woolie", you knew that you were in for a feast...Again, surprisingly, the gift sets tended to be cheap "cologne sets", and food sets that got recycled at Christmas...

Now our American friends know all about the current Aunt Woolie, based in Britain and the former British colonies, who may have bitten the dust before you read this...I hope not...
British Lap Dancing Association?...LMAO...

Does anyone know if there is an American equivalent? I want an Associate Membership: YOU go to the meetings, and I am going to "associate"...
Perhaps, this is how the Israel-Iran war starts...
@destry -- "I am sorry for the tone and wording of the precious comment in this market.. I meant no disrespect. I am humbled by my bad actions and hope I can begin to re earn the trust and confidence of each user I might have offended."

I hope that curios and the rest of us will accept your apology for the MANY TIMES that you have been arrogant and rude to curios, both in the comments sections and in email which he has shared with many of us. In the past few months, many of us have had to endure these untoward comments from you -- and mood swings -- with a regularity that does NOT make it pleasant to be on hubdub. Hubdub is not large enough to afford the departure of any more members due to comments like these.

You are an employee of this company and should possess adequate management skills to work pleasantly and productively with the members of this site, like all the other admins do. We respect your intelligence and capabilities, but not your moods. We are mostly a very friendly bunch...While we are opinionated and enjoy our debates IN THE COMMENTS, WHERE WE WANT THEM, we are really very easy to work with and love being on hubdub. That's why WE are here. Hopefully that will soon be the reason why YOU are here...

I am truly sorry that it was necessary for me to write this comment: it takes the fun out of hubdub for me. This is the responsibility of a senior admin, not a regular member.
...extricated from his whiskers...(aka plucked)...
...on chopstix...
Three "chairs" for our side...oops, cheers!
This sounds like either a test market OR a fake account. Which is it? I presume this comment will cause "artificial activity" to take place immediately...
CHECK THIS OUT:

The author of this question has been on hubdub more than five weeks and authored two questions about a possible Obama assassination: this one OPEN and another VOID. There is no other activity on this account: NO comments, NO predictions, NO friends...just the one open question in five weeks. Why would someone open an account soley to post this question??
Yes, it would take a DEATH POOL question to get us into OUR PARTNER'S publication: THE INDEPENDENT. Some partner if it takes a really gross tasteless sensational subject to get publicity...And this week has been the 45th anniversary of the assassination of Kennedy. Do you know what the word "assassination" has in common? A lot of "ass"es.

GO FOT IT nadine_dr_computer! Even the Maine State Legislature has better taste than this!
C'mon! I remember playing that song when it was new, in marching band, marching in a local campaign parade for John F. Kennedy in 1960...LOL...It was the most progressive thing our bandmaster did in four years...
My apologies for being so rude...
Oh, goodie! It sounds like a real-life economy game, just like we have today! You can lose your home to Fannie and Freddie (your computer which you pledged for additional hubdub funds), AND hubdub can go belly up and get a bail-out from Heehee--HAHAHAHAH--whoaHOHOHO-hahaha...Sorry, I'm laughing too hard to tell you where the money is going to come from....HAHAHAHA...
...will include a novel from jenni's BAD SEX list with coils of excrement...(jenni isn't going to live that question down easily, but we love her just-the-same)...
What are museums for? Places to store looted treasure...especially when the items were not properly taken care of in the first place. The items are now carefully protected, and preserved for all to see...

Next thing you know, Britain will want the US back...Well...after major economy and political repairs...They would do well to wait a few years before asking...
If we take this question LITERALLY and OUT OF CONTEXT, it is the question of the year:

"Which country is going to sink another?"
Easy answer: Merrill Lynch lost the shootout...Who is going to "bail-out" this golf game?
Let's hope they come out and PLAY FOOTBALL...I think that's what footballers are supposed to do...
with sincere apologies to dieseldog, who got duped along with the rest of us:

Is this the REAL -- rootin' tootin' YOU'RE DONE SHOOTIN' -- version of this question, SATISFACTORY TO ALL SUPERDUPERS AND ADMINS -- not going to be voided again for odds being upside down, rightside up, or going up or down too fast...

WELL LOOKIE HERE!! Destry just bought this question lock, stock, and barrel, which means that it's ok with the Admins...ANYBODY WANT 3% THAT'S LEFT? iT'S aLL yOURS fOR tHE gRABBING...

Afterall, the odds are really all wrong. 75% is far too generous. It should be a 95% question, because the Supreme Court is not going to challenge the next President of the United States, elected by the people...
Not a whole lot of creativity in the turkey-naming department...I would have gone for "arm" and "leg": what the holidays are going to cost a busted economy this year...
To put it bluntly, ALL of the cabinet positions are going to be leaked to the press, with official announcements to follow when it is not important...This system generates more excitement, more controversy, more news...BUT WAIT A MOMENT? AREN'T WE SUPPOSED TO BE THE NEWS PREDICTOR TO THE WORLD??
Interesting...Obama cabinet decisions, leaked as a method of informing the press (that has become increasingly commonplace), was sufficient to MOVE THE DOW JONES industrial average by 494 POINTS, but failed to move hubdub or its admin. But the appointments were all reported by major press and media as coming from reliable sources...

Just as Americans are fighting skirmishes in Iraq and other third world countries (rather than fighting on established fronts), major news is now being leaked to the press from reliable sources (rather than being announced at formal press conferences). And hubdub doesn't get it...The rules of political engagement have changed with this election, but we are not following suit.

If we are going to continue this way, perhaps "yes/no" political questions now require a third option: "other".
Wording is important here: FIRED settles as "yes". RESIGNED or OTHER settles as "no". The question here is solely whether or not he will be "fired over recent derogatory comments".
This is like having your fairy godmother wave her magic wand and make a terrible mistake! Who wants to wade through a reading list of BAD SEX novels?

Jenni, why don't you put on your "good witch" shoes, wave your magic wand again, and give us the GOOD SEX novel reading list for the year? Hmmmm? That would be a nice Christmas present for all of us...

Meanwhile back at the farm, WHO wants a whole reading list, filled with coils of excrement...?
The event should occur by 2020 (Barbara Walters says that best), BUT, the question suspends in only 5 weeks??

Has somebody been into the MOON-shine again?
Thanks curios, but actually I "goofed". I thought it was spelled "aa", but my trusty Oxford Dictionary indicates "au contraire".

The Oxford says: Afrikaner: n. Afrikaans-speaking white person in S.Africa, esp. of Dutch descent. (And there you will see the source of confusion, officially a single "a" in Afrikaner and a "aa" in the Afrikaans language. Fancy that!).
I'm feeling sorry for the spider. I don't think I would want to be "temporarily misplaced" in space by a NASA crew. Nothing like a bureaucratic press release. (He will be found in the scrambled eggs tomorrow morning).
While GM announced they were shedding two of their five private leased jets, all three companies said that their execs (some of the highest paid in the country) travelled by private jet for security reasons...

The security situation hasn't changed, unless MORE stockholders would like to get hold of them (more reason to keep the security)...
I think it is more likely that the McArthur is going to ATTACK SOMEONE THEMSELVES, than be attacked. It doesn't count if the McArthur attacks someone else and causes the fracas. No one is going to bother the McArthur, because it's not much of a tub to get a decent ransom...

but the little thing could have a sting in it's tail, especially when they figure out which one is "forward" gear...
How about this:

Former Senate majority leader named as U.S. next health secretary

Special Report: U.S. presidential election 2008

WASHINGTON, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Tom Daschle, former Senate majority (Democratic) leader during the Clinton's administration, was chosen by U.S. President-elect Barack Obama as the next secretary of health and human services, said a TV report on Wednesday.
Obama names Daschle to lead health drive
Posted Thu Nov 20, 2008 6:34pm AEDT

President-elect Barack Obama has picked former Senate leader Tom Daschle to lead his high-risk drive to end the US health care crisis.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/11/20/2425515.htm
transition officials have reluctantly confirmed that former senator Thomas A. Daschle (S.D.) will be nominated as secretary of health and human services
"So this question is asking: between November 21, 2008 and December 25, 3008, how many Guantanamo Bay prisoners will be reported as having been released?" and "Therefore, this question only asks how many will be ordered to be released."

The group of 5 and the group of 13 were both ordered released BEFORE these dates, and don't count towards the settling of the question. We are looking for how many NEW RELEASES will be ordered between November 21st and December 25th.
I used to know a white South African Afrikaaner who immigated to the US, claiming that he was going to become a White African American...
Thank you for keeping me on your challenge list, but I must decline this one. I thought the late post maybe meant that we were going to skip Bush-bashing this week. Afterall, he is nearly out of office and not likely to do anything at this point...
Actually, this revision is more confusing. If Hamas starts a war with Israel -- a direct series of incursions of whatever -- it will be an event that clearly states that they are at war with Israel. The adjusted version of this question -- When will Hamas be at war with Israel? -- is really wishy-washy. Hamas and Israel have both KINDA been at war with one another for some time, even when they have a ceasefire or attempt to look for some kind of peace settlement. Backyard skirmishes and small incendiary events continue.

As it stands now: this question could have been settled some time ago...

IMHO, one of the American problems with war is that we still want to see FRONTS and VICTORIES or LOSSES on those fronts...and that's not the way that wars are fought in the third world. It didn't happen that way in VietNam, nor in Iraq or Afghanistan, and it's not likely to happen that way in Israel or Palestine, or Asia or Africa. It's all about small skirmishes, suicide bombers, and various terrorist tactics...No Hollywood movies...No Brad Pitt leading the charge...
Not nobody know nothin' no-how...

Nix that. Was something not in the Atlantic basin? Not perhaps likely...
I agree with jenni. This question isn't about Palin bashing at all.

While I believe McCain made a serious mistake in his choice of a running mate, this is NOT Sarah Palin's fault. In fact, I admire how very much she accomplished in a very short period of time. The Republican Party took a big fish from a tiny pond, and literally POURED vice-presidentiality (sic) into her. Everybody knew that she was stuffed into a cram course on Washington and "the world out there", and she both grasped the material and performed amazingly well. Lipstick and Neimans couldn't hide the charming redneck aspect, but she carried off the "near impossible" in getting away with this amazing charade. And I rate the ability to do that as "smarter than we think".

To this end, Sarah, I hope you get everything you can soak the American people for. You jumped through all the hoops that were required, got a bit more time in the sun than Joe the Plumber, entertained the American public while they cheered, sniggered, laughed at you, and abused you...You go for it girl and get every cent you can get...! You earned it in my book.
She'll get "back to 'ya" on that...
And a gallon of milk is worth more than either one...And it could be worth more than both of them COMBINED very soon. Very sad...
Mind you, I already lost on Debbie the Polar Bear kicking the bucket. She didn't make it long at all after the question was written...How many buckets are there out there...?
SCI--ENCE FI--CTION, double fea--ture...
A question -- forever -- AND EVER -- and ever -- FOREVER -- hallelujah!
Most beautiful place anywhere in the world...
Yes, I would say that McCain was a formidable opponent who made a successful showing, and came in second place. The people spoke, and Obama clearly won.

notablenotices seems to be of the opinion that: you win or you lose, and ultimately he is right. IMHO, it's how you run the race that counts, and I have a lot of respect for both men.
If this question takes a whole year to suspend, it must be a sloooow coffin...
They have just had session 37a, which is really number 38 (which means that they have twelve weeks to go at roughly one a week). That would take us to roughly the first week of February, if they didn't kill one another over the Christmas holidays...
Bigken1 is reminding us of the possibility that foreign nationalities could possibly consider Bush, Cheney, and/or Rumsfeld as guilty of pre-emptive war crimes (the famous Bush doctrine that Sarah is still studying) that resulted in the deaths of thousands of Americans and Iraqis, totally disrupted a sovereign nation, and dramatically cripled the world economy as a result. This is one distinct possible viewpoint of many. Will any nation see it this way in the future, when Bush, Cheney, or Rumsfeld might travel unprotected by political immunity, and act on it accordingly?

Probably not likely, but an interesting observation. It is probably one of those things that many world leaders would like to do, but no one will act on it. They will smile, glower, and say nothing. But if the ground could open up...

...I think I would stay home, where I was safely unpopular.
The history of this question and the accompanying news articles refer only to an "auto czar" and/or a "point person". The individual mentioned as a possibility is an international economics expert from my alma mater.

No mention is made of this becoming a new cabinet position, and I presume that the appointment of ANY individual as an auto czar or point person on this subject will satisfy this prediction as "yes".
I've never thought of the Presidency as the ultimate legal-beagle position, but you have a point...
In Africa, when you are run out of town by insurgents wielding AK-47s, they don't tend to say "please"...
Essentially, the President will not be a private person for four to eights years, while in office. He has sold his soul (above the belt, according to Bill Clinton) to the people of the United States. On exiting, you get your Blackberry back to help assist you in rounding up important documents to put into your Presidential Library.

Why would anyone want this job? We can all be thankful and say an extra prayer at night that there are still a few people out there crazy enough to want to be President. The candidates are willing to get down on their knees and beg the people of the US for two years before they even get the job. They lose most of their personal identity -- which has now become public record -- and they become public fodder for the media and political cartoons. Their noses and ears are distorted and we remind them of every tiny mistake they make in public. They will be lucky not to leave office in disgrace or in a coffin. And we blast them with "Hail to the Chief" every time we see them, just to remind them that we're STILL WATCHINING, and don't pull any smart stuff...
"If he appoints either bill or hillary to anything he can just kiss the ability to get anything accomplished goodbye. Hiw years will be bogged down with one clinton scandal after another..."

I'm curious, so I'll bite: As Secretary of State, what sort of scandal would you anticipate of Hillary?
Has everyone forgotten that Hillary knows JUST ABOUT EVERYONE overseas, from eight years experience in the White House? I think she ran much of the White House during that period -- especially when Bill had his pants down -- and she was the one that travelled overseas extensively with Albright. When Mandela was elected in South Africa, Hillary, Albright, and entourage arrived in South Africa a few times "without Bill". Any surprise?

Hillary is well-qualified to be America's number one diplomat. She ALREADY knows almost everyone of significance overseas and would "hit the ground running".
So, this question is "time-related" for the end of November, rather than "event-related".
This is an event-related question and might sort...sometime...fasten your seatbelts...
Twice as much fun.
Where is the ENERGISER BUNNY?? I don't see the energiser bunny on here...
I imagine that the UK government will minimize the damage, just as the US government will...
Throw a dart at a board, and see where it lands. As good a guess as any...
Geez, if we had the answer to this question, we would have the keys to the universe, wouldn't we?
My Grandparents used to love "blood opera" on Saturday Afternoons...
Wasn't this the question where Sister Mary Margaret got out her ruler and smacked a hubdubber across the knuckles for being too generous with odds? Sister Mary Margaret is very busy these days and there are DENTS in that ruler...Getting your fingers in the way will cost you a few Our Fathers, a few Hail Mary's (pay attention: this isn't football!) and a Litany of the Hubdub Saints (hubdub authors who only offer 5% reward on predictions)...
Considering that life expectancy in Niger is approximately 40 (very true) and he hasn't had a blow out or a flat tire, they seem to be keeping him young!
Believe it or not, Stevens is still going to win Alaska. There is NO END to Spaghetti and Mooseballs up there!

Disclaimer: Bruce Willis used that phrase on Letterman tonight.
It's been missing for 40 years: what's another 2 years among friends...?

I'm sorry everyone: MY CUT AND PASTE WENT TOTALLY HAYWIRE. Here is how Comment 11 should have read:
-----------------------------------

Thank you Curios; I appreciate it.

@ friend fingers: I will look forward to more questions from you.

@ friend dragonfangXL: I think you have a great idea. A president (or any politician for that matter) should earn a favorability rating based on accomplishments, that are rated and approved by fellow Americans. At this point, Obama's favorability rating is merely a residual popularity rating -- left over from the election (which is neither good nor bad). If the powers that be insist on a question about favorability rating, how about measuring something really significant, for example: Bush's popularity rating for third week November 2000 to Obama's popularity rating for third week November 2008. And keep this question running weekly for a while. I think we would be comparing "apples to apples" FIRST for anticipation of the first term, SECOND for the innauguation, and THIRD for what actually happens during the 1st 100 days. Would anyone else find this interesting?

@notablenotices: "And if John McCain should win, a recovery team and ambulance should be standing by to get him to emergency in a hurry..."

You have pulled this quote of mine out of context. The comment was made BEFORE the election and was a part of a comment that poked gentle fun at all of the candidates. Did you honestly think I intended Hillary Clinton to sit beside a wailing wall all evening?

The election is OVER WITH and I am personally very pleased that John McCain will remain a forceful and vibrant element in Congress and American politics. If he would be offered an even more powerful position in the new administration, that would please me as well.
Thank you Curios; I appreciate it.

Thanks Jenni for the animated Oscar predictions!
It looks sweet, and I want to see it when it comes out in December. But I don't think that "sweet" gets you an oscar nomination, especially with a few strong contenders...
The best of the animated for this year seem to be WallE, Kung Fu Panda, and Horton Hears a Who. Horton was not my personal preference, but it is very clever, did very well at the box office for a few weeks, and there is a whole generation of Dr. Seuss fans out there that grew up on this classic. (Alas, I'm the wrong classic).
Madagascar 2 was pleasant and light, but not extraordinary in any way. The highlight is still Chris Rock's zebra...
NO also equals a gain of Anything At All!!
Note: This is a long-term market.

SOMEONE has a sense of humour...
My friends Jenni, Curios, and Destry are all correct -- each in different ways, and I appreciate all of their opinions.

As she states, Jenni has both been very open about her Obama support and very fair in trying to respect both sides of the debate. I admire her stance and the way she has handled it. The articles she offers are very interesting and worth reading. I STAND CORRECTED that other news sources are also making this most unfortunate connection between an unpopular retiring President and a very popular-at-the-moment President Elect with promise. Yes, that is certainly why we elected him: we are hopeful...

Curios is right that we are comparing chalk and cheese: comparing an unpopular outgoing President with an untested incoming President-elect -- about whom we are hopeful -- is not very productive, realistic, or likely to produce any factual answers.

Destry is also right. I had lunch today with a prominent Dallas psychologist who brought to my attention that Bush's approval ratings are very likely to rise by the innauguation, for exactly the reasons Destry cited: Bush being very helpful to Obama.

Jenni's aside is also "right on":

[As a personal aside, I think Obama's polling is ridiculously high -- as soon as people begin to realize that he can't wave a magic wand and fix the economy in his first week -- or even during the transition and then his polling will drop dramatically]

I think that most of my hubdub friends know that I lived in South Africa between 1968 and 1995. I saw the transition from apartheid to Mandela's election firsthand. The final election was between Mandela's ANC and DeKlerk's ruling party. DeKlerk had made the election possible, and there was great respect for both candidates. (After the election, they both jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize). The point here is that both candidates made absurd promises to the electorate that virtually promised free jobs, free houses, free car in the garage, etc, etc, etc. And of course, none of that was possible, regardless of who won. Whoever won the election was going to LOSE THE FIRST YEAR. The ANC promised one million free new homes to be built in one year: nine small show homes were completed at the end of that year.

The point here is that Jenni is right that Obama can't wave a magic wand and (1) fix the economy, (2) get the US out of Iraq instantaneously, (3) correct all the ills that the black electorate expect him to fix, (4) restore America's prestige among foreign powers in a matter or months, etc. Just as his favourability rating is inflated at this time, his favorability rating IS likely to drop again, due to no fault of his own.

And lastly, I think I am right too. I don't think this continued trend of Bush-bashing, Obama-bashing, and/or McCain bashing is doing America any good. I would have thought that we would have nationally pulled together again after the election. Obviously I was wrong: God forbid that we need another national disaster to get us to pull together again.

Meanwhile, each of us can do our part, including (but not limited to) (1) stop forwarding negative political emails (most of which are anti-Obama), and (2) I think we can drop irritating questions like this one and the one that refers to the "failed 2008 presidential candidate McCain".
@notablenotices:

And if the article said that you agreed to be decapitated tomorrow at noon on the Capital Steps, you would have copied that too?
from the history above: "the Republican Party's failed 2008 presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain of Arizona"

WHOA! ...John McCain is hardly a "failed...presidential candidate". He ran for office for more than two years, put in an excellent and respectable showing, and came in a close second to Barack Obama. He is now going back to his previous job as one of the most powerful and respected Senators in the American Congress. In no way can Senator McCain be regarded as an example of the word "failed".

Disclaimer: I supported Obama in the election and continue to support our President-elect.

The election is over, and it is time to set political bickering aside and pull together as one country. I am still getting a LOT of email bashing Obama, McCain, Bush, and assosrted dillies for other prominent politicians. Isn't it time to stop this?
The election is over and this question essentially amounts to "Bush bashing". No wonder I am still getting obnoxious email about Obama from die-hard McCain supporters. Hey Guys! The election is OVER and it's time to cool it. Now that the two plus year election is over, we are supposed to pull together as patriotic Americans and support our new President-elect. John McCain was adamant about this in his eloquent concession speech, and I admire him for it.

If presidential favorability ratings are still deemed important to current news, separate this question into an Obama favorability rating and a Bush Favorability rating. As it stands, this is a NAH NAHHHHH DA NAH NAHHHH question: Obama is more favorable than Bush. And right this minute, that isn't news at all....
Now, there seems to be human error in determining the cause of the human error:

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-11/10/content_10336901.htm

It's probably going to take a while to sort the cause...
I presume that we have a way to compare worldwide gross for the same number of weeks up to suspension date for all of the other James Bond movies? I presume that we are NOT comparing three weeks of Quantum of Solace to more than two years gross for Casino Royale? Right, gang?
What the world desperately needs now is NOT "love", but a GOOD FANTASY:

And QUANTUM OF SOLACE is arriving at exactly the right time...perfect timing for a great box office success.
I hope that Obama learned from McCain, and doesn't pull a "Palin" on this all-important position...
As long as she doesn't have a criminal record (and no one has mentioned one to date), "adjustments will be made" quietly, the aunt will disappear from public view, the press are not likely to mention it again, and you won't have a way to settle this question...

A custodial sentence is a judicial sentence, imposing a punishment (and hence the resulting punishment itself) consisting of mandatory custody of the convict, either in prison (incarceration) or in some other closed therapeutic and/or (re)educational institution, such as a reformatory, (maximum security) psychiatry or drug detoxication (especially cold turkey).
Hmmm.

Is Giogio Armandi that friend of Pier Cardini?

Carnac and Jamest are correct: there is a good deal of work --in addition to pleasure -- in managing a large portfolio. This is the first time I have made time to visit the new forums.

Carnac and Jamest are also right that larger investments have a substantially lower percentage payout than what the average hubdubber wins with a good prediction. In effect, we are already being taxed on our winnings, and the little guy gets the benefit. And here's another benefit for the small guy:

On the positive side, the larger investors often "point the way" for smaller investors with their prediction investments. After all, we got to be larger investors by doing "something" right. If you can see which way we are investing, it can be helpful guidance for all (unless we are doing something really dumb, and we are not trying to throw our money away either). Whether our bids are public or private, you can clearly see which way large bids have been placed in the prediction odds. Be sure to check the settlement details with opening percentage odds on each question, so that you can clearly see which way large bets are being placed. After all, someone placing a H$ 5,000 bet is a bit more likely to be certain of their thinking than someone placing a H$ 5 bet.

One more thought: WE ALL STARTED WITH H$ 1000. The suggestion in this forum is that because some of us started in January that we have had some kind of advantage. THIS IS NOT TRUE. I often click on member names to see HOW LONG they have been members of hubdub. I am often astounded at how many hubdub members there are today who have been members since January, and still have an all-time net worth UNDER H$5000. In fact I have seen a few this week still under H$2000. I am just as amazed as you are! And why is this so? Because how well you do has a lot to do with how much time you put into the investing side of hubdub. The Comments and Forums are very interesting and mentally stimulating, but don't help your hubdub earnings. Increased return comes from managing and re-working your hubdub portolio. Fortunately there are many different benefits that we can get out of hubdub and you can choose what is most important to you.

If it seems that the hubdubbers with the larger portfolios automatically make high returns: think again. We also have heavy losses at times, and I monitor both potential gain and potential loss.

Lots and lots of good ideas here from everyone. Yes: a prediction watch list would be very useful. Dieseldog had a good alternative system for it. I keep saving questions I want to come back to on my computer "favorites" and am careful not to put favorites in alphabetical order. My hubdub "return to" questions are all at the bottom of favorites. The alert system is another great idea and I would use it, but it doesn't solve my problem. The reason why I use "favorites" or "dieseldogs $1" is that all of my investments are maximized and I am out of cash. But as soon as I have cash, I want to return to those questions....

I don't like the new (two months old) adjusted percentage of possibility. With yes and no largely eliminated.

Try this question:

"Will Nigel's wife ask him for a divorce before Christmas 2008", and the current likelihood is: 23%

Quick!! What does that mean??!! Is she going to divorce him or not?
Answer: 23% likely actually means that it is UNLIKELY that she will divorce him before Christmas. Good for Nigel! But why didn't we just say it like it is in the first place? That was the way we did it up until a couple of months ago.

I like change and improvement, and many fine improvements have been made to hubdub since January. I don't like this predictor improvement and wish (on this one item only) that we could go back to the way things were...

@jamest -- YOU'RE RIGHT!!

I have noted in notes to tech admin that the leaderboards are consistently showing everyone (at least in the first 100) as being worth substantially more than their real net worth. No one has answered my email about this problem, and it seems to have been ignored. You're not imagining this: it's real. Pick any individual on the upper end of the leaderboard and look first at their net worth listing and then at their home page, and there is a difference of approximately H$40,000 on each hubdubber. Check it out! All I can think of is that there is a major flaw in the program that can't be removed at this point: so it is ignored. With HOW MANY REGISTERED USERS? I can't believe that we are the only two hubdubbers that have noticed that the totals don't add up.

The one good point about this is that everyone looks SLIGHTLY BETTER OFF than they really are! Maybe there would have been more noise if the system showed that the totals were "lower"...

In the beginning, I was not so keen on challenges, but I have changed my mind. Today I really appreciate the challenges I receive, because they help me keep up with the most important predictions, and it is very nice to hear from your friends!

BUT, I only want to receive a challenge from you IF YOU WROTE THE QUESTION YOURSELF...Challenging your friends with other peoples' questions is a cheat in my book and clogs the system with multiple challenges for the same question. That's playing "on someone else's nickel". Unfortunately, even some of the admins do this...

If you wrote the prediction, I very much appreciate your challenge and will do my best to take up your prediction...Although I am not knowledgable enough to even know what some people are talking about, and must occasionally decline a challenge. But I do appreciate them! A BIG Thank You to all of our question writers.

Well, well, well....

By Game Time 2016, President Obama will be winding up his eight year term of office, but will Sarah have gotten back to us yet?

This was the year of the grand Chinese Olympics. And the great Chinese curse reads: MAY YOU LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES...

(we do)
So, PC no longer stands for politically correct: it means POODLE CLUB. Ok...?

Think about this a minute: Are you really going to get a new puppy that has to be housebroken, BEFORE you move? The White House is obviously huge and would have more space to help the girls get used to their allergies with the puppy. Would YOU really start this BEFORE you move?

AND FINALLY, every puppy in the country has bought it's lottery ticket for the White House, in hopes that it's number comes in...
@valor:

Great to see you back writing questions again!!

I just love your definition of "old white guys": born before January 20, 1958. I guess this goes into the hubdub lexicon as well...LOL...Does this mean you were born on January 21st, 1958? Just kidding...
I presume that this refers to a NEW Saturday Night Live program, and not another repeat of a program already shown for this election.

A repeat of the "Presidential Bash" that was shown on Monday night is ALREADY scheduled for later this week and includes PRE-SHOWN FOOTAGE of Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live. Can you please clarify?
Well, a question with 50 possibilities, including the blanket "other", and we are supposed to guess this one? It will be VERY interesting to hear the eventual answer. For now, let me consult my hubdub psychic...Where is Miss Cleo when I need her...?

"Pennsylvania Republicans highlight Wright in last-minute ad"

from this article:
"The ad was paid for by the Republican Federal Committee of Pennsylvania and was not authorized by the McCain campaign."

and the settlement requirements of this question:
" Ads: official campaign ads only ("I'm John McCain and I approved this message") "
Looking at the pic for this question, brought to mind what we need for the election questions: the same world globe with a PLUMBER'S FRIEND on top of it...
Actually, this question asks whether or not McCain will get Ohio...
First of all, I can only imagine what life is going to be like for the admins and SUs after the election, getting an amazing number of markets tallied and settled in an orderly fashion.

I want to personally thank each of you for the hard work and effort that you will be putting into hubdub our our behalf...you each deserve a gold star on your forehead and a tiara for jenni...Nigel should send each of you an award of honour for not quitting now...

What will we be doing after the election? SPORTS of course, what else amounts to nine out of ten hubdub questions (or at least it seems that many). And lately the old sports questions are getting new, more excruciating twists: Will the Redskins run the ball in this game 300 yards forward down the field? Will the Redskins run the balc in this game 300 yards BACKWARDS down the field? Will the Redskins manage to go more than 300 yards SIDEWAYS down the field and back again? Who will win O/U 743? (Is that the age of the oldest player?) And I am hoping that we can somehow look forward to better questions than these -- and chasing snakes and alligators -- for the next two months.

Have you ever noticed that you often get terrible service in a restaurant BOTH when a restaurant is "chock a block" full AND when it is nearly empty? It's now the lull before the storm with the election settlements, and easy settlements are really slow at the moment. Like the Sarah Palin Halloween costume question in West Hollywood California...

A quick suggestion to all participants in this debate:

BEFORE you post your entry, COPY THE ENTIRE CONTENTS, and then push "post reply". This way, if it times out, you have a copy and can quickly try again without losing your valuable thoughts...

This debate is far too interesting to lose any ideas to "time out"...

While I am not participating in this debate, I am reading it with great interest and appreciate all viewpoints...

After two years of ridiculously hard campaigning for both candidates, I should think the loser is ENTITLED to at least a good sniffle or five...

The winner is entitled to be misty eyed and overcome...

Somebody should bring a portable wailing wall for Hillary: she is entitled to sit in a corner and HOWL...

And if John McCain should win, a recovery team and ambulance should be standing by to get him to emergency in a hurry...
Is this still the Jessica Simpson curse question? That's ALOTTA games without Tony Romo's finger...
Why beat around the bush? Why didn't the author just offer two options: (1) California or (2) ANYWHERE ELSE? That's the real question, isn't it?
Wonderful carnac! Gotta luv it!!
Does it work for lipstick, etc...?
How about a mortuary?
LOL...But watch out: Sarah's in the bushes in her new Gucci hunting outfit with a BIG GUN!

First one that moves his hand has had it...
If you check the all-time net worth leaderboard, you will find that plus/minus half of all registered users on hubdub have a net worth of "0". TOTALLY INACTIVE. They signed up, blew the H$ 1K starter kit, and never bothered to come back. There is another percentage that play very infrequently but have some kind of positive balance. Some have been around since January and still have a balance under 2K. If you start from the front of the fourth quarter leaderboard and watch "activity" for the fourth quarter, you will be startled at how few genuinely active members hubdub has.
He's a super-dragon XXL Republican, and we love him anyway...

What independent do you know that is going to be elected to the Senate?
Glub...glub...And then there is Gladys "Goonch" running through the background, screaming "I LIVED! I LIVED!" She's back in the Gary Cooper film again...
Joe Lieberman is regarded as an "independent Democrat", but is not up for re-election this year.
It means frying them in virgin olive oil, with a dash of garlic and sundried tomatoes, served on linguini...After you have had the pick of the Ganges, this is a gourmet fish...

Somehow, you can tell that the election is almost over...
Somehow the link I sent previously didn't work. Here it is again:

And American Airlines...among others...has been thinking about how they can get away with this for some time...

This sounds like a Supreme Court issue. Are Republican Family Values pro-fat or anti-fat?
...and just as easy to find a reliable settlement source...
I think it would be easier to predict how many Americans are on a diet...
But I am betting against it...Opec cut production this past week by a million and a half barrels a day (which should shove price up), and the election will be over in nine days. Traditionally gas comes down for the election and back up afterwards...unfortunately...will it be the same this year?
It's possible as a national average. I filled up yesterday at $2.27 in Dallas. That was the lowest I saw here yesterday (highest was $2.89). There was a price war in a small town to the south of Fort Worth on Friday: lines around the block for $1.96 a gallon...That made the 5pm news on tv...
This question has been suspended for nearly two months (forever) and should be settled on November 4th. I guess?

Many of us thought this question would settle with the conventions. (sigh). No. Our money here has been tied up and tied up and tied up and tied up and tied up and...
By the end of November, will anyone remember who she was...?

Wow! She did it! Good for Edna...one strike and she got an invite to Dr. Phil, two strikes and she might appear on SNL...and three strikes might get her Oprah.

One thing you can say for Edna: She has BALLS.
Options 1 & 3 are possible together, as well as 2 & 3 are possible together. In that event, will this question be "double-settled" or "voided"?
Clothes sent across the sea to her "neighbors", the poor starving people in Russia who don't have Neiman's...But she'll be watching what they do with them with her binocs!
Will you pee before 3...Will you dine before 9?

The law profession in the United States CAN'T WAIT for gay marriage to be legalized in the US. A whole new legal profession will then open up:

GAY DIVORCE...

It doesn't replace anything that previously existed or take away from any existing market. It's a whole new way to make money that didn't exist before.
@valornhonor,

You're right! I won't be elgible under Obama's tax initiative. (Sigh). It's only hubdub dollars!

But here in Texas -- as you know -- we're not seeing much campaign advertising at all. This is MCCAIN country and I don't see many ads for either side on tv. But what really counts for me is not targeted advertising, but what I see on all four debates, daily clips from news reports, and interviews when they occur. That's where I made up my mind, and I have already "early-voted".

Now I can watch it play out on hubdub...
@ friend notablenotices: "So buses, taxi cabs, the sides of buildings, tee shirts, hats, coffee mugs are now all becoming advertizing space."

None of this has been new since at least the 1960s. There have been the fascinating "God" billboards in the last couple of years...but even they have become old hat now. I agree that it does seem strange to advertise atheism on a bus...
I remember in a college course, being fascinated with the fact that Renaissance Pope Sixtus IV "died of peace"...After being unsuccessful in getting the city states to war against each other, he went south and declared a crusade against the infidels in the Holy Land. Nobody came, and he died shortly thereafter. Be careful: peace can "getcha".
Very interesting, thought-provoking and newsworthy question. While we have been listening to astronomical amounts raised and how John McCain seems "poor" by comparison to Obama, this question helps us all to get the picture into perspective. Where do I apply for a $10 refund?
onedave has a good point. The announcement of a winner could well be an hour earlier than the actual concession speech...The answers to the TWO questions could easily be an hour apart.
We are talking about the four key representatives of the United States at this time...which is a bit scary...

Obama looks very well presented, just the way he is. No doubt, big money has been spent on his appearance as well. At least, it LOOKS like someone got their money's worth. I'm not against spending 150k each on the presidential and vice presidential candidates to sharpen all of their images, but don't you think that we are entitled to expect good results for our money? We are not just improving their image to sell voters images for the election, we are selling THE WHOLE WORLD on what every country will be dealing with next. That is worth the makeup and the "emperor's new clothes".

The really poor reflection here is on NEIMAN MARCUS, who I very much respect. For $117k, couldn't Neimans have done a better job than that with the Republican Vice Presidential candidate?? Sarah still looks like a charming cute redneck. How about a prediction question to the effect that Neimans will comment: "you can only work with what you get".
It's NOT a patriotic armadillo...?
I think they have already done that...
The HISTORY for this question clearly states: "Play period: 25 Oct. 2008 to 31 Oct. 2008 inclusive."

Meaning: the next China foodscare would need to be discovered "within this period" -- between the coming Saturday and the following Friday -- and be a NEW issue, "NOT a previous matter already under investigation."

While this question is already open for betting, earliest discovery date (according to the history) would be THIS SATURDAY. The oranges, while interesting, are too soon and would not qualify.

However, the oranges DO give us a tip-off, that there could well be OTHER SURPRISES on the way...It gives a whole new meaning to "you are what you eat"...
Thank you Nadine for the "heads-up":

"The infected oranges look normal but have maggots inside. The Wangcang government issued the maggot epidemic on September 27. It purchased all maggot-infested oranges for 0.3 yuan (0.4 US cents) per kilogram and buried them after treatment.

The manager of Shanghai Shanhua Fruit Wholesale Market told the newspaper yesterday that Shanghai fruit dealers seldom purchase fruit from Sichuan due to the long transport distance. At present, only some kiwis in the market were purchased from Sichuan.

The city’s quality watchdog checked Shanhua market and found that all oranges were free of maggots."
"..NEXT China food scare..." means "something new" during this period...and NOT a previous matter already under investigation (tainted milk or green beans already under investigation, for example)...

Now if we can just get everyone to stop chewing on their Christmas toys...gnawing, actually...are they exporting to beavers?
Is the American Congress reading this...?
How many fingers and toes -- still attached -- do we have to count this with?
Nice question curios!

Powell translation: "I'm definitely NOT interested, but I'm all ears and WHAT did you have in mind??"
"other" would be his Birthday Suit?
What about the small private militia armies that we read about, around the United States? You don't think they might be a threat? I would presume that they are carefully monitored, but they are still operative? And as kruijs indirectly suggests: with an army of 100, ninety-nine could create a diversion, while it only takes one to get through...

There is a Chinese curse that says: MAY YOU LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES...
How will we know if it is Sarah Palin or Tina Fey on Letterman's show??
Two of the most corrupt countries in Africa are missing from the list: Ruwanda and Burundi.

Zimbabwe, 14th from the bottom, appears absolutely angelic...Ebagum...Mugabe spelled backwards...will be delighted...
Remember when your Mommy told you to eat your peas for "the poor starving people in China"?

Do you know what the Chinese are going to tell their kids in 2009? To eat their rice for "the poor starving people in America"...
dieseldog has a point: I had forgotten about the effects of full moon on some people. And dragon, while trying to be funny, also has a point: certain astrological colisions do occur at times that produce interesting aberrations of thinking. Like seeing Russia from your front door...OR hiring someone who THINKS she can see Russia from her front door.

FACT: I had a great secretary for fifteen years, whose husband went totally nuts every full moon. He would disappear for days or go on a massive spending binge or a three-day drunk cycle or...She eventually divorced him and remarried him again two years later, but the craziness never stopped...

And, of course, this is the origin of the word "luna-tic"...
@cheesenips: Thank you for the most interesting and informative article.

Why am I not surprised? With McCain struggling to not look like McSame, and W with all-time low approval ratings, the GOP needs to do something to help the current government look better than it really is (to prop up both Bush, McCain, and an ailing world economy). The truth would set us free, like a ton of prunes on an empty stomach...

So, we do the third-world thing with a pencil and effective eraser. Anybody remember the film HAROLD AND MAUDE? Remember when Harold's Mother filled out the dating questionnaire for him while he did a mock suicide? Perhaps we are enduring the same approach.
I GOT HAD on this question last month. All reports were of increased unemployment, but the OFFICIAL report was "unchanged"...What?

The world is in it's worst financial state since the Great Depression, but somehow we haven't had negative growth, there is no official recession yet, and unemployment is holding steady a couple of months in a row. The stock market is going beserk; Congress consists of politicians, NOT economists; the Presidential Candidates are scrambling to come up with answers that are NOT in their field of expertise; the US is broke because it gave away all of its money to Iraq and Foreign Aid.

And here I sit looking at this fascinating question, knowing fully well that there is escalating destitution in unemployment going on at alarming levels, and I can guess that the OFFICIAL VERDICT will be issued as "no change". There must be 101 reasons why all of this is a figment of my imagination, but I am going to predict "higher" again...and lose my money again.

So, for all of you people out there struggling with the current economy -- I can't sell my house or get the next house I need -- you're just imagining it...!
I filled up Friday evening at $2.499 per gallon in Texas!

I've never quite decided how to write this question, but I have always thought it would be interesting to predict on a particular date to be selected at a particular l
